Hi everyone,
here’s my first purchase in a while. It was on the Bidamount list Buy it Now for £80. It’s diameter is 15”. It does have 2 crack and a chip on the back, but these aren’t really visible from the front.
I’ve been bidding on chargers but always the undebidder, never the winner! Because I wasn’t buying it as an investment I figured the damage wasn’t as important. The price I thought was pretty good.
What do you guys think? I thought perhaps Qianlong? Is this right?

this is absolutely right for an 18th century Qianlong charger. Very typical decoration for the time. Nice buy, and 80 pounds is not too much, I think for a plate with that size. Even with the damage. Congratulations

For your reference, attached images of two large dishes, 45/42 cm and a large group smaller plates, 23 cm, all recovered from the wreck of the Geldermalsen - the so called ‘Nanking Cargo’ which sank in 1752 ...

I lack the expertise to say one way or another that this is a Qianlong charger but it certainly looks like a Qing-dynasty charger. If it is Qianlong, 80 pounds is an absolute bargain. Even chargers from the Guangxu period often sell for over $1,000 and sometimes for much more. My recollection is that the dividing line betwen a charger and a plate is twelve inches, so this is a large one. I think the decoration is very attactive and well done. I know some prefer the deeper cobalt blues, but my preference is for the paler blue. I suspect this displays beautifully - so it's an excellent buy whatever its age.

I watched Peter's weekly video while I'm sure you were fast asleep in the UK. I was delighted to see your charger shown as a bargain of the week. Additionally, Peter confirmed its 18th century origin confirming what you thought namely that it is a Qianlong piece. He said it needed a good cleaning though - so you now have a job to do!
I'm really delighted that you got such a good buy when most or many of the stories here are about problems with eBay!

Thank you! Before I purchased the charger I emailed the seller several times regarding the condition. I wasn’t so much concernerned by the back, which has 2 hairlines and is indeed a bit grubby. I was concerned by the condition of the front. I was trying to ascertain the nature of the wear as outlined in the description.
Anyway, after several emails I was reasonably happy that it wasn’t too obvious. Indeed, when it turned up I was delighted. As Peter mentions in the video, the photos he’d taken had done it no justice whatsoever. The front is quite clean and the back is better than I’d anticipated. It displays wonderfully!
It’s nice to have a bit of luck with Chinese porcelain! As you say, we’ve all had too many experiences of being sold fakes or pieces arriving damaged. Your warm congratulations is very much appreciated.

Found this when looking through this sellers items .Don't like it quite as much as your charger but it is very similar so thought would bring it to your attention just in case you had not spotted it. So far not much interest as far as bidding but there are still a few days to go.
