Sorry if this is a duplicate, I am not sure what I did with the last post here but I am unable to find it.
I just received this bowl that I got for a very small amount. Based on the images it looked like a nice Zhangzhou bowl to me, however I have never seen a Zhangzhou piece done with a dragon on the exterior in this manner. The style of the dragon looks pretty Ming to me, however I am having a hard time finding a comp to a dragon drawn in this way on this type of piece. Anyway, what do you all think? Based on the color and the foot rim, it looks pretty good to me, but I wanted to get a consensus from you kind people

Hi Justin, I’m not sure about this one, I think it’s a later copy. There is Swatow with green and red but the colors are brighter and the painting style is very fluid, practiced for years. In this case the painting looks rather stiff. I’m sure some Ming expert can tell you more about it.

I am not expert by any means but I also have a couple of doubts. One is the shade of the colours but that could be my screen, the other is the odd wear on the outside whereas there is less on the inside.
The dragon does indeed look strange, rather stunted in length and the overall look in terms of perspective and balance is odd. He also seems to have lost a claw on his front paw/foot.
Thanks guys, I had my doubts upon opening it which is why I posted it here, but wanted to give the benefit of the doubt to the seller as it was a Catawiki purchase. I have reached out to Catawiki as it is still within the 3 day point of receiving the item, as I think it is pretty clear it is a later copy. I think the listing images may have had color adjusted, as the colors looked way lest bright online.

Justin, your bowl is a tough call. I am not sure either way.
FWIW, a couple images.
The first is of a Swatow bowl from the book - Zhangzhou Ceramics 16th to 17th Centuries Found in Indonesia by Sumarah Adhyatman. It shows a layout and dragon similar to your bowl if that is any consolation.
The second image from the same book shows two pieces with very contrasting shades of red and green. Not uncommon. This difference might be from the qualities of raw materials used, kiln atmosphere, or from the effects of burial or shipwreck.
And a couple plates form the Binh Thuan shipwreck from - The Ming dynasty’s ceramics in the Vietnam History Museum.
Shows how environment can effect color.
EXTREMELY interesting post - that first bowl is very similar and I see what you mean with the contrasting colors, especially in that last one that is very similar in the type of contrast on my bowl. This is a tough one!
I am glad I was not the only one having a really hard time with this, because some aspects look good while others had me questioning it. The colors were obviously super washed in the listing images, that is why when I opened the box I was surprised. But it has so many potential good points that I really was left unsure.

I just wanted to post an update that I heard back from two dealers who feel that, while the decoration is on the less-than-typical side, they do feel that it is an authentic Zhangzhou bowl. I appreciate everyone's time and opinions, this one had me stumped! Thanks so much!
