Hi Guys:)
I've found this brush pot. I think it is Yu Hanqing, but I'm not completely sure that it is real. Thank you guys:)
Hi 88Teo88,
I may be wrong but to me the item looks modern. The bottom gives it away, also the leaves and flowers are painted in a careless way.
Birgit
Thank you Birgit:) yes, these things also were my first thoughts, but I've checked many items from this artist and I'm confused a bit.
Why it could be a fake one: bottom, foot rim, looks modern
Why it could be a real one: artist lived from 1904 to 1987, this age isn't as old as a piece from the early republican period or the late qing dynasty, therefore I ignored the modern appearance.
If you check these items, not so high quality:

Birds, and that blue flower and the little orange flowers on the end of branches:

orange signature, in a red square:
and I have seen 2 fake ones on ebay, really poor qualities:
I don't know Birgit, It looks too much energy and work and not so expensice for a fake one to me
I agree with the post by Birgit for the following reasons.
Your vase is painted in the style/manner of Yu Hanqing. The figures are still, stiff and lifeless.
The examples posted are imo with the exception of artnet all copies painted in the style/manner of Yu Hanqing.
For a genuine example please go to Bonham's site and view the vase that was on offer in HK in 2009 with an estimate of HK40k-60k. The style is stunning! Compare the quality of the artist stroke/other.
When one is trying to verify whether said works are in all probability genuine one must carefully examine if the painting style, subject, style of calligraphy and the seal marks are correct by known examples.
Bonham's lot has a very good reference/catalogue to known examples by this artist. You may wish to view/research further.
Personally, I do not know this artist. My interest is likened with better known artists/members such as the 'eight friends of zushan'. However a quick search showed the example I have mentioned.
Mark
Thank you Mark:)
I have checked the bonhams site and the vase is very high quality, but this one isn't:
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/15883/lot/6690/
but I understand you and I think you are right, guys:)
then is this brush pot worthless? or the other copies on the 51bidlive or the auctionzip? because that's the truth I really like it:)
I have found a lot of porcelain on the Invaluable, then these ones are a mix of fake and real ones?:
https://www.invaluable.com/search?keyword=yu%20hanqing&upcoming=false
Hi Teo,
IMO the items for the most part sold via invaluable/liveauctions are reproductions with the exception of a couple of high end/priced examples.
It is worth noting that the three major auction rooms often list 20th century porcelain plaques/other as simply 20th century. Selling them not as genuine works by artists but tributes/other.
If they thought/believed said listing was a genuine example they would include the artists name in the lot heading and or in bold in the lower part of the description.
If you go to Bonham's, for instance and search Wang Yeting (famous member of the eight friends of zushan) you will quickly see the very wide price difference between genuine and tribute/other prices asked or achieved.
Some students of republic period masters were even better than their masters. Like for example Yu Wenxiang (1910-1993) who was master He Xuren's best student.
I agree with you that the four plaques sold at Bonham's were probably tributaries rather than genuine examples. However they were sold as period items.
A large number of fake/other works are often inscribed with calligraphy/artist seal and often (but not always) dated within a year or two of the artists death.
I have seen some very good later copies selling at auction for very high prices. I have also seen some genuine works selling for very little. Sotheby's NY metropolitan museum sale held a week or so ago had a number of republic period plaques. One being a superb example by master He Xuren sold for a bargain (my opinion) price of $3500.
If you like republic period porcelain I should recommend a highly sought after book by Simon Kwan. His research is second to none!
Mark
Hi Mark,
do you mean the book „Chinese Porcelain of the Republic Era“? I bought it some months ago. Was 136€ directly from the publisher but worth every cent.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Yes that's the one. I believe it is available via Muwen Tang fine art publication for HK880 + 480 post (1360 total). Apparently this is a updated version!
Used copy also available on eBay, but ATM it is priced higher than the new one on offer from HK. I have put in an offer that was rejected.
Haven't bought one yet, but will soon.
Out of interest, Birgit have you compared the Xu Zhongnan plaque I purchased/posted recently on this forum with examples from this book? I would really appreciate your thoughts etc. 🙂
Mark
Hi Mark,
there are two examples of bamboo by Xu Zhongnan in the book. Unfortunately your pictures in the other post are quite small and do not enlarge so I couldn't compare the style. Could you post better pictures?
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
I have up loaded three pics for you. However the quality is IMO low from my cheap phone.
If you still can't view/enlarge you can go to the Sotheby's Australia site and view this plaque by typing said artist. There is only one result.
Mark
Thanks Mark, I had a look at the Sothebys page. The way in which the bamboo and rocks are painted is very similar to a 1941 dated vase in the book. To me it looks like the same hand. Congratulations, a great purchase!
Birgit
Thank you Birgit, your opinion is very welcome/sought.
