This dish was sold on ebay in october. How old do you think it is? Is it period dish made for the export market or is it more recent?
The faces look modern to me, just a touch too sweet to be real Yongzeng.

Can this be republican? I think the enamels and style would be right for this period.
It wouldn't be a C18th export dish with a 6 character reign mark, so that means imperial Yongzheng, but that is not likely . There is something odd about the gilding on the hair and the objects , too much maybe, and the way the robes are painted is more like late C19th or early C20th . The mark is very stiff and over-careful.
As Peter said in a recent video , they did not produce copies of C18th imperial ware in the Republican period, so that means it must be later or earlier. I would say this is likely a modern copy, nicely done, but it hasn't got all the elements right.

hi tam, a few high quality 18th century export ware had a 6 character mark. I linked a few examples. Please read the bowls description on catherine hunt website. She is a reputable british dealer.
Republic is often suggested as a kind of compromise between really old and modern. But Republic has some of the most typical faces of all times. If faces look nondescript like the ones on the plate, they are usually modern. Also Tam is right about the elements like clothing and hair adornment. They seem to be taken from different ages and don’t really fit. It’s however alarming how good the quality of fakes has become.

It makes you wonder who would pay $2100 for this.... You should look at the sellers sold listings. Selling fakes on ebay is profitable.
it is a very similar yongzheng, but higher quality, maybe it was the example for the copy?

There are a lot of very naive (to be kind) people on ebay. The seller is not claiming it to be antique, nor any of his fake items on sale. How can people fall in this?

PS: Of course, it is useless to report him to ebay: he is not going against any rule, he never say that his things are antique.
He’s walking a very fine line, for example he describes things as ‘rare’ without dating them, but these things are all relative. He also says things like ‘see similar in national Gallery Victoria’.

The label under this jar looks very suspicious to me. Look how a date has been added in script to suggest something to the buyer without him saying it himself.

O yes, the jar with the piece of an old envelope glued to the bottom. We have discussed it somewhere.

The fact that people are buying other pieces off him but have not bought this one suggests that those buying *think* they know what they’re doing?
