Hi,
Do you think this piece is from the qing dynasty or is it modern?
Very nice pot. I think it is Qing probably 19th C.
I like it.
George
Yes this is pretty impressive casting for bronze and quite unusual , imitating the look of a bamboo brushpot;
does the interior panel rotate ?
tam
Nice bronze and desirable and would probably date late Qing.
I certainly would like it, very appealing and good detail contained within.
Mark
Does not rotate, do you know how much this can be worth?
First there was no such thing at Qing period. Second if you look at the Xuande mark, totally new, wrong style. The patina is not right. I have seen a lot of those things on fleamarkts in China.

Xin,
Still a nice item for display, I’ll pick one up when I go to China ?
George
Hi Xin,
Thanks for that information.
I was totally unaware that they were not producing bronze bitong during the qing period. Now I learned something new!
Out of interest how much do they sell these at the flea markets in China?
Thanks again.

Hi Mark,
Bronze or copper is used for coin production at Qing dynasty, that means material equals money, similar to gold. So if you make a bitong like this, it would be very expensive. That's the reason. Not like Ming dynasty, silver was mostly used as money, not bronze. That's why there are so many bronze vases, buddha figures and incense burners.
I don't know about the price. You may find something similar on eBay, I think.

Thank Xin,
Very informative quote
Are you saying therefore that no bronze bitongs were made during the qing dynasty or are you suggesting that they could have been made, despite the hefty cost involved at that time?
I am not trying to be funny or argumentative at all. Just want clarification in the event of....
Mark
Hi Mark,
Because of the hefty cost no studio would make them and then look for buyers. Most of these things are special order and have a private mark than Xuande. You may find a couple of old bronze bitong somewhere in museums or at auctions, but it's not like the quantity of bitong made of bamboo or other expensive wood. Bronze bitong was not the trend.
