Hi to all,
as we just talked about a vase with a fake Xianfeng mark, I'd like to ask your opinion about my only Xianfeng item, if it indeed is one. The bowl is 11,5 cm large and shows deer, monkey, wasp and two magpies, which symbolize a wish for high rank and good payment. When I handle it I would say it's really old and no copy, but I don't know if it's really Xianfeng or someone added the mark later to an old bowl. Does anyone have another Xianfeng item and could show it here?
Christies has a Xianfeng bowl with people, where the tree looks similar to mine, but I don't know if that means much.
Birgit
From what I read, those black birds did not appear until the late 19th/early 20th century. The bowl you have is nice. I do believe it was made near the end of Xianfeng reign.... or at least right after his reign... and they honored him with his seal mark.
I agree this looks ok as a C19th bowl , but whether Xianfeng mark and period , I really don't know ; these four character seal marks (as here, hand drawn not stamped) seem common in the Tongzhi period , but they may also occur earlier than that. And as the other poster indicates, the two black birds are a characteristic of later qing decoration. Peter discussed a 'jiaqing' marked , covered bowl in the video this week , which he put later , possibly because of the black birds.
In the C19th there was a trend to re-enamel vases, especially to create 'famille noire' vases from famille verte originals, but I don't think it's common to add an older mark, and you could probably see the signs of a later firing around the mark (?)
tam
It looks old to me but whether the mark was added later, I can't tell. To be honest, (and this shows my inexperience!) had I found this without a mark, I may have thought it was older - mainly because of the brown rim, the use of the blue by the deer and the foot rim is very like an 18th c bowl I once owned.
Is the shape of yours slightly different to the Christies one?
Julia
Thanks for your comments. I don't know how signs of refiring would look, there are no traces of anything on the bottom. The porcelain is slightly uneven and has impurities, it's not oily and smooth as Qianlong, there's rather a 19th century feel about it. As to the black birds, that's an interesting theory I haven't heard before. However I have a Yongzheng tea cup with black birds that are possibly mynahs (see below) and saw a similar one in the National Museum in Taipeh.
Unfortunately I was able to retrieve only one picture from the Christies website, so I couldn't compare the foot etc. But the form seems the same and also the painting of the tree in three parts (you can't see the right part on the picture of my bowl, but it's there).
Happy weekend
Birgit
Birgit
Birgit, I think you can feel quite confident in your bowl. I don't think there is any good reason not, too. It is clearly old, the mark looks fine and I think you are very lucky to own it.
Enjoy your weekend, too. ?
Hi Birit,
Based on said pictures I would estimate that your bowl is a period made piece.
The seal mark, soft green colours and the cobaltous blue along with the slightly rough underside suggest that this is a really nice period piece.
Mark
Thanks to all of you. I’m relieved that it’s a real item. I found it by chance some years ago in an Ebay auction that was about to end in a few minutes, so I had to decide quickly. Got it for 500$ which I think is not a bad price for a Xianfeng bowl.
Birgit
You did very well, especially if there are no hairline cracks.
Mark
Dear Birgit,
I've had a chance to look at your post about your bowl.
I also agree with the thinking about it expressed thus far. I see no particular difficulty in considering it mark and period. You have a good buy especially, as Mark says, it's in good condition.
Regards,
Alan
