Hi All,
Hope everyone is feeling good today. I won this pair of Wucai Jars, yet to get them sent. I don't know when they are from, but think they are antique? I think they are very pretty and I have a thing for the immortals.. Any thoughts? your wealth of knowledge and a good discussion would be very much welcomed.
I think a mirrored pair would be very rare, if I am remembering correctly (I will have to check that) so unless that has changed, that would be enough to make me suspicious of the age. They look very impressive but I am not convinced they are transitional/Kangxi. The bases seem rather contrived, I may be wrong but my feeling is these are later copies. I have been thinking of buying a wucai piece, but am holding back as it is so hard to be sure from photos.
Here is another one you can compare yours with, it is worth zooming in to compare:
Found this, but it may not be current thought:
Thanks for the input, I was hoping they could be c18, but realise they are likely later. Interesting to know about mirrored pairs. It does seem after a quick look, most pairs aren't mirrored. I did find one transitional pair, I'll have to do some more looking..

Hi Thomas -
Concur with Tim @greeno107, Julia @julia and Birgit @shimigami, these are not mid 17thC but much later, IMO …
Attached images of three guans, the first two sold at Bonhams London, 6 November 2014, the last with ‘Hundred Boys’, Victoria & Albert Museum Coll, London …
Note the differences in overall painting style, enamel tones/shading and application of and individual motif detailing - all very different then the pair posted …

I know what you mean. The style is different to the majority of 18th century wucai jars. less fluid, more neat, finer lines with less spill over. There does seem to be a few different varieties of style thou. I don't know if this is because they were mis-evaluated or not.
here are a few that have more in common with my vases. I'm not suggesting they are C18, but I'm exploring the tropes and trying to learn more about these wucai jars. They were sold as "probably C19"

At the risk of being accused of being a person who’s only pleasure is to bash others, let me add the following:
I looked up the sale of these jars - Hannam’s in the UK.
This auction house sells mostly Asian ‘antiques’, and they sell in Liveauctioneers.com, so it is reasonable to say the chances of genuine antique/ good quality pieces selling for less than market value is very unlikely.
Sorting the items sold from highest to lowest selling, there is also something to learn.
Their highest priced selling Chinese porcelain pieces appear to be fakes of high quality.
Their lower end Chinese pieces appear to be genuine, and their Japanese antiques appear genuine, too.
I suspect Hannam’s uses a common tactic used by many auction houses - mix good quality fakes into lower valued genuine pieces to lure less experienced bidders into bidding up the price on the fakes.
Unless you’re bidding on Japanese pieces or lower end Chinese pieces, I would avoid this auction. If not, you’ll continue to fall victim, buying fakes in hopes that they are genuine.
From my books mirror pair is a 20th century thing. Republic Period
