I know that this site is mostly about ceramics, but I am throwing this one over the transom, so to speak, to see if anyone can help me identify a sculpture which I think is Guinyan. Am I right or wrong? I know that the pictures are not great, but can anyone identify the wood or the age of the sculpture. The wood is exceptionally heavy for its size. Could it be zitan?
I have no idea, Tony, but I think she is lovely even if she is new! A photo of the base may help.
I suspect this is more recently made. We will need to see more detailed photos.
@julia I have attached a bottom view. i have trouble photographing dark objects. i don't think that it is "new" in the sense of 21st century. I was thinking 20th.

I agree that is not "old". But that is also not a demerit per se. Quality and aesthetics are more important. This one is a little better than decent, but not great. I have taken some marginally better pictures. More can be made.
@tonyatl it is like you are both over exposing and under exposing it with the light. It's a very odd effect.

yes - i am not a good photographer. i think that if i turn down the exposure a notch it might be ok.
It's a very nice carving. I thinking it's fairly modern from the 2nd half of the 20th century. Nice detail.
It's difficult to determine by way of the pictures of its indeed Zitan wood.
If you take a cotton swab of denatured alcohol and gently rub it on the underneath the cloth should turn either black or red.
Red could indeed indicate Zitan along with Hongmu and Huanghuali. Black could indicate that it's been dyed.
Zitan is a very dense wood so it will sink in water. But so does a number of other woods.
If you try the try the two aforementioned methods and it passes then it's good chance you have zitan.

you are the man. thank you for that tip!!
It doesn’t show the typical texture of Zitan wood. For a typical Zitan example, please refer to the massive brush pot that was recently sold at Sotheby’s Paris:
Sorry, Tony, I simply meant that it is a lovely piece even if it turned out to be new, not that it was new, although it does appear to be modern. Thanks for the additional pictures. Hope you find the answers you seek.

if you study these examples, you will see that zitan wood has numerous manifestations. zitan wood at DuckDuckGo

i did not take offense, but your point is important because value is driven by both age and beauty. new can be quite valuable. and yes, the general consensus here is that it is newer rather than older. i agree with the person who said second half of the 20th C.

i applied denatured alcohol and got neither red nor black - just a little dirt.
@tonyatl Yet without the typical “ox hair” texture, most collectors or buyers won’t be convinced. After all, the current market is flooded by so many different kinds of dark wood from southeastern Asia, South America, and Africa. In fact, some experts admit that new Zitan wood have different textures and wood grains. Although they are the same biological species, the current market doesn’t recognize them as the traditional Zitan. Best
