I used the Grundner 50% sale as an opportunity to buy this blue and white bottle that I had been looking at for a while. The bottle was made in Vietnam in the 16th century probably as a vase. When the neck broke a silver mount with a lid was fixed to it. As there are all kinds of experts here, maybe someone knows where and when the mount was made. It doesn't look European to me. Also it's not made of silver because it hasn't blackened. On a corner on the inside there's a spot of verdigris. On the lid two different metals were used, one a bit yellowish

The mount makes me think of Persia or Damascus. Could it be some kind of steel laid over something more copper based? Sorry, that doesn't sound very technical! 😊
It looks like silver. Could the metal have been laquered? In that case it would not tarnish (untill the laquer gets damaged). You could also do a magnet test and see if it is magnetic at all, that will at least exclude some metals.

IMO said mount has a district Indian (cast) look. Have over many years seen similar to yours attributed as Indian silver.
As too when it was added is anyone's guess. The best one can state is 'later'.
Nice example. The silver mounting adds character. You have a good eye/taste.

Thank you all for your opinion. Yes India was my first impression too. The metal is not magnetic. Obviously this vase has traveled around in Asia, what a fascinating thought.

Hi Birgit,
First of all I like your vase/ bottle very much. I have long admired Annamanese ceramics. Vietnam was under the yolk of French colonial rule for a long period of time most of the text books on Vietnamese ceramics have been published in France very few of them have been translated from the French. There are many great collections of antique Vietnamese ceramics in French museums man of the items have metal mounts. Perhaps your item was mounted in France in the 19thc in a style they thought was fitting but to our eyes may seem a little out of place geographically. Think it is hard to give an opinion on the type of metal from a photo perhaps a good quality Jeweler maybe able to identify the metal for you. You are lucky you spotted the vase before me I am currently awaiting a couple of items from Edmund.

Hi Michael,
what a good idea to look for French books. I didn't consider that Vietnam was a French colony. Maybe that's the reason why so many French dealers sell bleu de hue items. There is one English book that seems to be quite good, it's called "Dragons and Lotos Blossoms" and it's inexpensive as a paperpack. Have ordered but not received it yet.
As to the material of the mount, could it be nickel silver? Obviously it has a long history and there's copper in it which would explain the small patch of verdigris: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel_silver

Birgit, you do have an interesting vase does the weight of the mountings seem a bit light for the size? The reason I ask is the metal of the mount looks a lot like that of my newly purchased nautilus shell. I to am having a hard time figuring out the metal and it does have the same brassy copper rubs and a very tiny bit of vertigre. The seams have been soldered. It could be made from a sheet of thin nickel silver.
You’re right Ron, the detachable lid is rather light. The material seems to be nickel silver as on your nice shell. Probably a 19th century repair.
