Hello,
just picked up a carved piece and was hoping that someone may be able to help with any possible information. The piece is about 6” tall and 5” wide. I believe it to be white jade. It does have some small areas that are more opaque than the rest. Is it possible to gauge approximate age or value from photos?

When you write ' I believe it to be white jade' what makes you think that. Did you buy it/sold to you as jade and or was it other.
From said pictures of only 2 it is difficult to determine age, let alone its value.
What country/area are you from?

I bought it as white jade. Also had someone that handles jade pendants tell me the same. She thought maybe 50 years old but not sure. She couldn’t give me a value as she doesn’t deal with anything except pendants.
Not sure to trust either of her evaluations. Just a friends friend that looked at it.

have you tested it for hardes does feel heavy is it cool to the touch and take some
time to warm up theses are test you can make. But from the pictures I see some pin holes
between the flowers that don't belong there you may want to hold to light with a 10x loop
make sure there's no bubbles. These are some of the test to check for jade the pin holes
would not be there in carved jade unless it part of decoration. John

Those are actually dirt spots. I cleaned the vase with a tooth brush and cotton swabs. Some places I could not reach. I plan to find something that I can clean the rest of the piece.

Hi Lee,
If you want to test it yourself I would advise you to do the following in addition to what John has advised.
1 Yes do the touch test, but NOT with your hands. Hold said item to your cheek! Only amateurs use there palm/hands
2. Scratch test, gently using a knife/other make a line on the bottom. If you see a mark, that is a scratch it is not nephrite jade as nephrite has a mohs hardness of 6 and jadeite jade has 7. It also means that if you see no scratch it could also be other. Nothing beats handling hundreds of items over many years rather than looking at pictures in catalogues.
3. If your friend handles a lot of jade, she should have some idea. Especially if she has been doing same for more than 10 years
4. Since you live in Taiwan there are numerous places to go to who can examine your item like a valuer/gemologist. There is also from memory a market place somewhere in Taiwan that deals only in jade and is a meeting place of jade dealers/collectors. It is a fascinating market.
5. Finally if it comes back as genuine jade you would have a very nice piece that is a beautiful color, almost mutton fat (depending on the light and better pictures)
