Hey Folks,
So I thought about posting this to general discussion as a PSA to folks who ship things, but decided to post here in the hopes that no one has any comps and it is clearly not a Kangxi vase, and I don't have to sob into my coffee for the rest of the day.
I bought this last week off ebay mounted as a lamp, and though I couldn't remember a comp it looked like the red enamel on my early Famille verte pieces. The next morning I found a comp ( very very similar, though different design elements to a degree) in the Royal Trust collection, so I was quite ecstatic to get my hands on it. Unfortunately the box arrived with a certain jingle to it, that breaks even the most steadfast heart. It seems that the bronze base made contact with the sides of the box and shattered the lower half of the vase. That is my PSA of sorts, heavily pad the mounts, and completely immobilize the piece in the box, and then for the love of god, double box these things.... they survived this long and deserve to survive another few hundred years at least.
Still I haven't found any other comps for triple gourd iron-red-ground vases, at least not like the one in the RTC. I have temporarily glued it back together so that it can stand, and at some point I'll do a full proper fix to get it close to intact, but for now I don't want to look at it too much, makes me genuinely sad.
I wonder if anyone else has a comp they know of, apparently there is a similar triple gourd in the Limoges museum or one of the smaller French museums, though I haven't found a digitized example.
When I clean the foot off, I will add a few pics, it is filthy.....as is the very finely made French ormolu mount, which will get the lacquer removed at some point....
Cheers,
Jeremy
~30cm
I at least got to photograph the amazingly precise luting of the gourds from inside....
The example from the RTC
https://www.rct.uk/collection/search#/7/collection/11845/pair-of-triple-gourd-vases
It's lovely despite the damage.
It's very sad when dealers don't know how to pack things and that it is to their detriment, too!
That is such a shame, Jeremy!
Thanks for showing the luting photo, that is not something easy to see usually.
I was going to ask if there was a repair to the top rim, as that may have meant the vase had some unseen structural weaknesses from being damaged previously, but another photo looks like it happened in transit and you fixed it.
When you have worked on it and cleaned upto the mounts, I hope you will post it again.
Hi Jeremy,
This has happened to me a few times, one time in particular in which I considered the piece to be very special. It takes three or four days to get over...at least for me. I felt almost "heartbroken" initially, but it passes quickly. There will be more treasures in the future. And it actually looks like this piece will be quite nice after a repair. Onward and upward, my friend.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hey Steve,
Couldn't agree more. I feel bad since they thought it was packed really well, tons of bubble wrap. Unfortunately is as still moving around inside the box.
It sure is pretty though, and I'll give it a five foot restoration, looks good until you are five feet away. Very very interesting enamel work.
Jeremy
Thanks Julia,
Yeah I mean the shot up into the vase is pretty amazing, not just the luting line( which kinda blows my mind, they made a socket from the lower half and fit the upper into it) but also the precision of the neck being attached, really incredible potting.
There was a repair to the top rim, so that was my concern with the shipping, as I expected it to fall apart there if it all went to hell. Interestingly the top 3/4 stayed intact. It probably wouldn't have broken if the bronze base hadn't been hit. there just wasn't enough padding there, maybe two inches( the sides had 6"), it poked right through the bubble wrap. I will totally update once I've put it back together.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Here is the cleaned up bronze base at least, really lovely gilding.
Hey Todd,
Definitely was going to keep this one, it really seems quite special. It always takes a few days to get over it. Luckily as you say there are other treasures just around the corner. Might just have to buy myself an oddball Chawan to make up for it.... haha.
Cheers,
Jeremy
As Peter likes to point out, think of all the treasures in museums with repairs.
On that note, the bronze arrived yesterday and the damaged lid snapped when I was unpacking it; it was holding on by a thread and it caught on the bubble wrap. I am able to get the lion to rest on top for display, at least. 🙂
Oh my gosh Steve, I am so sorry, I totally was expecting bronze to survive the journey. Eeeeek that that is terrible.
I will say most pieces in museums are conserved in some way. I have so many books where half the pieces are just glued back together or missing pieces. Heck, more than half of the pieces I have were restored. Just bums me out that it was mostly intact a week ago...
It is a great looking censer you have there though.
Jeremy
True, although it's much worse when it's one's own fault.
Put the appraisal request in just now; we'll see what the boss says. I'm inexperienced handling bronzes but I am liking what I'm seeing.
