This box is at a local shop. The grain is interesting and kind of exotic looking. I'm hoping our wood people will be able to tell what it is, and maybe give an idea of age and quality. Thanks! John
No help with the grain, but for some reason, the first thing that came to mind was some type of military campaign piece. I hope someone can address all that script. How about chestnut? Sharon
@johnshoe Yes, but after I had my chuckle, I Googled Chestnut grain and Chinese and Japanese Chestnut and I'm not sure it is not possible. I hope the grain experts ring in with an opinion.
Also would like to know what all that script is about on the lid.

this is the closest to grain of the box your showing,it doesn’t have the ghost figures but that’s more rare and prized by collectors.John

@john-steward I just looked through the types at the link you shared. Based on the pictures I think it is more likely Jumu or Yumu, which are the elm types. At any rate, it's an interesting little box. Maybe I'll buy it.
@johnshoe A couple of observations:
This is a Korean chest. It seems to come with a matching Korean brass lock. My initial thought on seeing the grain on the end was that it might be elm, but the grain on the top is a bit "over the top" - unless it's cut from some kind of burl. What bothers me is that - although the picture isn't clear - the bottom board looks like plywood (maybe lauan, "Philippine mahogany"?). If so, that doesn't necessarily make this a recent copy - it could just be an unfortunate repair. Having said that, though, I do know that over the past 50 years, a lot of copies of traditional Korean chests have been made (but with wood like this? probably not).
I believe it was common practice to paste paper as a lining on the inside of chests.

Not sure this helps, but I came across a less elaborate box on ebay with the same interior. I think it was described as vintage, although that may not have been the actual word used. The guy was selling several wooden boxes, none of which seemed terribly old.
