Can anyone tell me the significance of this scene? For that matter, general information about the panel is also welcome. Thanks very much in advance!
Welcome to the Forum, you will need to reduce the size of your photos or crop them in order to get them to post.
That thing is huge. The pictures blur out when I enlarge them so the scene is a bit unclear. If you can upload some more detailed photos that could help better clarify what's going on.
@cocosvariety Interesting that it is a polychrome piece, looks like it might have been an architectural piece (maybe upper part of a door frame) does the backside show wood grain?
Sharon, I am not sure what the back looks like. A friend got this in a storage unit purchase and I said I would ask at the forums. I will ask him for a photo of the back and dimensions.

@cocosvariety The feather hat and overall clothing looks like a scene from Kangxi period porcelains that often depict scenes from the famous story, Romance of the Western Chamber (kind of a Chinese Romeo and Juliet story). The story is set during the Tang period.
Your panel is very well carved, 19th c., and could be from an elaborate wedding bed, or perhaps something architectural. I would put my money on a bed, and given wedding beds were made specifically for 'wedding activies', a scene from Romance of the Western Chamber would be appropriate.

That is terrific insight. I looked at a lot of pictures of wedding beds and found similar 'dramatic' scenes to the one pictured here. I was thinking it could be an exterior architectural element, but wedding bed or indoor architectural element makes more sense with the remaining paint.
Appreciate the insight very much. Lead me to read the Romance of the Western Chamber synopsis.
It's a very elaboratory carved scene.
Difficult to judge the age by way of image's but certainly looks late Qing period if not earlier.

It looks like they are celebrating winning a battle - I guess that might fit a wedding bed theme, but I couldn't find a similar Romance of the Western Chamber decoration.
You may be able to work out more from the clothing and things in the scene, like the shape of the flag or whatever it is that man at the other end is holding. Some kind of bagpipe?
@julia Thank you! Great idea and insight. I was looking at birthday celebrations like General Guo Ziyi but the people in the panel don't look very celebratory.
