So I bought this a little bit ago, while not paying very much attention to the finer points of it, such as I didn't see the seller's photo with the mark. Honestly I just liked the shape and the decoration , Bid and won. Now I am left think what the heck is it? and wondering if it is a fake, and if so what is it a fake of? The paste isn't what I'd expect a modern piece to be, it is smooth and creamy, but the "dirt is very stuck on there, though I haven't exactly scrubbed it. The mark is not written like anything else I have seen either, could it be republic, or just a down right fake? Anyways, I finally snapped a few photos of it and hope maybe someone here will know something....

looks like a food warmer to me. As to age I don’t know. The inscription seems to be made by the same person who painted the rim pattern, both look a bit awkward.

At first instantly I thought it's a planter..But when I saw holes in it, and different sections - I am positive sure it's for a tea serving.
@lucky I thought it was a desk accessory, the vent holes puzzled me at first, but you could perhaps put two ink pots in the small inserts and a pot of sand in the larger one or for a container for water to wash your brush/pen. The vent holes in the larger one being in the classic Japanese Y stilt pattern puzzled me as well. The warmer for tea or other makes sense, except it would be for small pot, how about to warm sake? Needs a matching sake bottle and two little cups for a party. I wonder how long it takes to fill and drain the reservoir?
We have seen the basic reservoir shape before here, one was a Bonsai planter the other had a tulip frog insert. My first thought was a Bonsai planter for thee plants. The reservoir would keep the plants watered. But a Sakai warmer makes perfect sense to me.
I wonder if this basic reservoir shape is as versatile as just adding different inserts?
I thought it was for bonsai too. Mind you I have made an art of being wrong so take that for what it is worth.
Maybe bulbs sit in the shallow bits and their roots go through to the water in the reservojr? Although, it does seem there aren't enough holes.
You'd imagine it either has to be something reaching through, draining through or heat rising up through.
Whoa! lots of good suggestions, and everyone seems to have gone down the same paths as me....
I certainly have considered a food or sake warmer of sorts, I was thinking maybe there are a series of bowls that go on each section so two for sauces and the big one for what you are eating? Sake could make sense too of course.
When I first saw it I thought of an inkwell, but the holes kind of threw me off.
Just rather puzzled, but thank you for all these suggestions.
