Hi all,
A while back over the summer I purchased this from a seller in PA. We connected with the family and they've been a great friend since the purchase. Ideally, this was purchased to help honor my brother and our passed relatives within our home. It's been displayed with personal affects and we pray properly at the altar.
This item also came with a story for its provenance, not certified or directly documented but we know more about it than most items come into hand. Until I get clearance from the family, I will not make direct name mentions however. This was a scholar's gift from mainland China during the mid-late 19th century to their relative, a doctor.
I believe it is made out of Huanghuali wood, but I may be mistaken. It includes intricate carvings involving birds of paradise on the back, a moth motif on the bottom as a raised and carved portion, a d has two drapery clip points on the front.
Included photos of the grain and un-lacquered spots of the piece.
Does anyone know more about these? I'd like to build more info about it to help cherish the altar.
That's beautiful. What an amazing piece of furniture.
The moth looks like a bee to me. Bees represent industriousness and abundance. If not a bee, maybe it's supposed to be a butterfly (beauty, romance). (For some reason, they do not include moths in my book of Chinese symbols although I know they appear sometimes.)
@steve thank you!
A bee would make sense to the gift idea but it seems off with the general motif of the piece I think. I think need to take a day and research motifs and how they interact with each other rather than their core purpose. Butterfly maybe but the abdomen is very unexpected if this is the case.
I purchased this Japanese Butsudan to aid in the recovery from a stroke and also use it for the memory of my pets in heaven. Notice the amount of gold gilt used for these. It sits on a tansu that has a 1906 date inscribed on a bottom drawer by the maker.
George
@gfhandel that's a beautiful piece set. It is nice to be able to share and learn from the way we honor our past experiences, relations and loved ones.
I know Japanese gilt work can be immense, such as being dipped in a vat of gold almost. Chinese details accents with it, such as the flowers shown in the BOP carving. I notice this more with reproductional wood relief panels. I feel there would've been more details of this gilting had it been better conditioned, but its soul would not shine so bright to me if so.
Which, the soul of art is what motivates so much to our passion. Our collections reflect this as such. A beauty within itself.
I think I posted here without officially questioning looking back at this. Am I right about this being Huanghuali or would it be zitan? I'm novice to what it all should actually look like.
Hi Preston,
Your alter cabinet is very nice example of later Qing.
Unfortunately imo it's neither Huanghuali or Zitan wood but rosewood.
Mark
@imperialfinegems thanks Mark, that helps me in quite a few ways with this piece alone.
Offhand would you suggest late 19th/early 20th century or earlier in the 1800's?
@imperialfinegems alright that matches up to the provenance story detail too, very nice to know!
