Hello Giovanni et al:

This is yet another example of a sloppy,  inaccurate and misleading eBay posting and description. The seller does describe it as Ming and then as Kangxi and probably does not know the difference between them. However, as discussed elsewhere on the Forum, he had added sufficient disclaimers so that no one could criticize him for posting misleading information. There are too many eBay sellers who make statements such as "I think it's Kangxi, but I'm not an expert and I'll let you decide and bid accordingly." Most of those don't offer returns either. Sellers who resort to that type of thing should not be represented ever on bidamount.com, in my opinion, even if they have occasional good pieces.

Regards,

Errol

Hmm , I'd much rather a seller says 'it could be kangxi , I'll let you decide '  than give some spurious certainty about it being kangxi.

Also, we have talked about selling with a no return policy before on the forum, and I think this is fine too! Otherwise as a seller you expose yourself to buyers' scams and dubious attempts to get discounts/refunds etc. Ebay will always protect the buyer.

Finally , if the seller doesn't know what they are really selling , then that's where the real bargains are (as the OP shows here) and Peter's newsletter can provide excellent help.  Unfortunately this vase is perhaps a case of the newsletter throwing up mistakes or picking new/recent items.

Hello Tam:

I agree in general. My experience though with that type of statement is that when a seller states that you almost immediately know that the item is not Kangxi but a much later item. It is a ploy used to push up the price.

I have only returned one item because it was indubitably a fake. I do a lot of research before bidding on eBay. I think though that the combination of incorrectly described items with a no return policy is bad for honest buyers. Unfortunately, as you point out a lot of buyers are just as dishonest as many sellers.

I agree too that an ignorant seller who has found a rare gem of an item but who does not realize that is every buyer's dream especially when the item is a "Buy it Now" item. If  it's an auction item though, there are too many knowledgable buyers to let the piece go undetected and for someone to get a steal.

Of course, Peter's inclusion of items on bidamount.com is exceedingly helpful if not indispensable even to experienced buyers. However, when he promotes an item by highlighting it on his video, I have noticed that the auction bidding gets more active the next day. When I have seen an item I wanted, I have often hoped that Peter would not mention it in his video for that reason.

Regards,

Errol

Look what I have just come across at a local auction:

Lot 8 - A Chinese blue and white meiping vase with famille verte enamel decoration of warriors in

Lot 8 - A Chinese blue and white meiping vase with famille verte enamel decoration of warriors in

I am not sure the coloured painting is exactly the same but it is very similar.  The blue is the same pattern.  They are estimating £120 - £160.

Dear Julia:

That is quite amazing. As you say, the colors, shape and pattern look very similar and this one is undamaged.  Good detective work!

Errol

An astonishing find, Julia. Obviously the two vases are from the same workshop. Both don’t really convince me. The painting as well as the foot look modern to me.

Just to finish up on this vase: there were no live bids, but three commission bids had been left - it sold to the highest at £100.
