Hey Todd, thanks for the closeup of the mark, but thank you especially for solving the mystery of what was "in the box" - I love the dragon's expression, he looks so delighted 😆 very neat piece right there as well, per usual.
(Also thank you friend, the Kutani bowl is from the Kosen kiln - they do a lot of Yoshidaya style revivals, some with modern twists like that one)
So, Julia and Michael both bring up some interesting points: maybe it was part of a stand/multiple part set of sorts, and for a manufacturer production run of sorts?
The holes could also be for air dispersion while firing, ect?
Which will bring me to addressing the priorly mentioned subject too:
(I agree it does bare a resemblance in a way to the Raku character somewhat)
Maybe it's Raku inspired; but also if molded/due to being even and with the sheen, defeat the idea of Raku itself - which is being made (for the Japanese way) with just the hands of the potter and a spatula/folding tool.
Western Raku is popular, as a studio pottery style also diverges in methods from Japanese traditional; since it can allow for a luster/iridescence of sorts due to a differing step after being taken out of the kiln - whereas Japanese Raku is usually matte from air cooling.
They do still usually share the hand-formed nature from my understanding tho.
I leave below what is a likely a western "Raku inspired" chawan due to the iridescence and texture (which also differs due to variations of studio potters creating their own methods for unique surfaces), but the idea in form remains if you look closely at the lip and see its unevenness from being hand-formed:

After turning it this way and that, I believe I can make out the mark. Although I’m not 100% sure I have it. I’ve gone ahead and drawn it.

That is the kind of thing I am imagining, but with closed ends as though they were flags (maybe 2 either side) on crossed poles. At least, that is what I have in my head! I was sure I had seen something similar but maybe I am just always thinking of Valentines.

Thanks for the additional info. A hole would have been needed for venting, but an additional utility is possible too. Would one hole that size been enough for venting? Why two holes? I’ve no idea. Maybe Michael is onto something. It is a weird thing for a bowl as Julia confirms, common for statues/statuettes of course.
So, not Raku. That helps. The item was in Japan until recently, that is the only provenance.
Here is the green bowl with lid. It has a 2nd rim on the inside of the main bowl for for the lid to sit upon, which is unusual for this type. As opposed to the rim pressing against the inside of the bowl. But you know this already, JRN. 😋 I don’ know what the mark is.
