Hi All,
OK, I have been reading this forum for MONTHS, and I still don't get it. Here is a vase (17" high), with children playing on the front. I can't put together the clues to figure out how old it is!
The children have nearly identical faces (bad), but they are only a little sunburned--not terribly orange. The painting doesn't look terrible to me, although the background objects and vegetation are very cursory. The calligraphy certainly leaves a lot to be desired.
But the base looks to me to be 19th century, with an iron oxide rim on the enamel, and a bit oatmealy porcelain that is white where it has rubbed, and appears to be hand-trimmed. The blue glaze in the center of the bottom looks ok to me. The base had a good deal of dirt on it, but it washed off with a toothbrush and soap.
So, what is the age of this thing? Is it PROC or later, or is it 19th century? I am guessing PROC...
Also, what does the calligraphy say?
Sorry for the mix of indoor and outdoor shots! the outdoor shots were near sunset, and do not reflect the true color of the vase, which is bluish, closer to what it appears to be in the indoor shots.

Hi Charles, it’s a typical Republic vase. The more colorful decoration came in to use around 1920. The vase is most probably from the 1920-30 decade. When you have seen several of them you’ll quickly recognize them as the form, inscription, colors, handles with worn off gold always look similar.

I hate to be gauche, but I am buying alot right now, as I attempt to learn something about Asian arts. I will probably end up selling most of the items I purchase, once I learn all I can. Just to make sure I am not wasting too much money--I spent about $150 for this vase. Is that reasonable?
