I’m back from an exhausting day-trip searching for treasures. This piece is the biggest puzzle for me. I’m going to post just the interior initially, just to get a few opinions, then will post the exterior. The exterior has me completely thrown. The center painting has a name to the style I believe, but I forget what its called, if anyone could enlighten me. The quality of the painting seems quite good. Of course the script is also a mystery to me….

I am unsure about this. I can't enlarge the pictures which doesn't help, so at the moment I might think late Meiji/ Taisho - but that is a guess. I'll have a better look this afternoon.
I am looking forward to seeing the back.
Sorry, I still have no idea even with enlargements, but may I ask it if is porcelain or earthenware?

Well, that is not what I was expecting to see. Not sure what I thought it would be but not that. What strange markings.
When I enlarged the pictures, I noticed the loss of glaze on the rim and didn't think it looked like porcelain. It is rather nice, isn't it?

I was afraid no one would take a 2nd look at the interior once the exterior was viewed. And I thought the interior was pretty nice…
I wasn’t even sure if it might be Chinese. But Japanese seems right.

Yes, I think Japanese. The scene looks like something that might be found on Satsuma the way it is drawn, not the colour! I am sure I have seen bowls like this but I can't find one. It is probably more recent than my first impression.
Maybe someone else will have an idea.
I believe this might have been made by extraterrestrials. Just my thoughts....
Interior looks hand painted, it might be a studio art pottery piece with all that script on the exterior, I hope someone can translate. I like it. That may not all be script on the exterior but some abstract design on one side and scriot on the other?
I really like the interior of this one. I actually liked it more after you posted the exterior, though! The artist made a deliberate choice to leave the exterior unglazed, which takes a little more work than simply glazing the entire thing. I'd imagine it would feel natural to hold. It looks like it might be a chawan for tea.
Hi Sharon, Yes, a design on one side and a bit of script on the other. Studio pottery is certainly a possibility.
Hi John G, I should have included the dimensions. About 7.5” wide, a bit too large for a chawan. It does have a good feel 🙂

@watership perhaps it is a chawan... just for ET's, since they are typically a bit larger... or so I've heard anyway.
