I’m having a terrible time identifying this bowl. I’ve seen the mark somewhere before but can’t seem to find it now. Not sure if the pattern is common either. Possibly they’re immortals or scholars?  It’s a big bowl. About 18” across and 6” deep. Scalloped edge. I suspect it’s a late Taisho to early Showa bowl but would love to get the opinions of those who are far more knowledgeable on this. Thank you members!

My goodness.... what a thing.

A Kutani version of 1000 scholars. I have never seen an equivalent. 18 inches across? That is a rare size. I am thinking Meiji, but not very sure.  The faces and postures are a bit repetitive which points to later. That type of scalloped edge is more often on earlier pieces. Maybe someone can look through the Kutani website and find the mark. The double ring is unusual. Am interested to find out more about this lovely bowl. Nice find!

@watership

Ok a Kutani mark? I must have seen tons of Kutani marks today  but couldn’t find that double ring mark. I thought the art seemed kinda hurried, and 1930’s like. But I really have no clue. It is an impressive size.  Thanks for your take on it!

Hi Tery,

Does it appear hurried? You have it in your hands and I am only looking at pictures, but it looks more on the crisp side to me. At least in the sense that the artist "stayed within the lines". The artistry/style is more subjective. As I mentioned, it is a bit repetitive with faces and postures. But I like it 😊

@watership  Maybe being too harsh in regards to the art.  The faces aren’t too flat. I guess I just expect stunning faces if it were a Meiji bowl.

That is a big bowl! Very nice. I would do as Todd suggests and ask the Kutani website. I feel it is 20th c rather than 19th, it may be late Meiji, but it may be a bit later. I am not sure later pieces needed spur marks, but there is something about the mark and colours that makes me think it could be Taisho.

Sorry, it sounds a bit of a vague opinion. I will have a better look later on a bigger screen and let you know if something more definite strikes me. 😊

The only other thing I could add is that I might, not definitely but might, expect a 5 clawed dragon to be more likely post-Meiji.

It's too difficult to determine by way of the pictures. They are very blurry.

It looks like kutani ware. It has two marks. One in the center and another one i think is on the left side indented. I have seen this mark before but I can't remember it. I did try and find it to no avail.

It looks like four spur marks. This could possibly indicate Meiji period 1868-1912 judging by the design.

It could of course be a later Taisho period one with fake spur marks.

Overall it is a rather large example.

It's very nice.

Mark

@julia Thank you Julia for your take on it.   I tend to believe the same as you on this. I’m feeling this is a non- export piece made in the 1920s or 1930s. I wish we could find this mark to nail it down better.

@imperialfinegems Thank you Mark Adams for your input. The spur mark dating isn’t something I’ve ever considered.

Wow, @teryjaki, I love your large bowl. I've not yet seen another like it either. The mark is "九谷造", or Kutani-zo, which just means Kutani made. I think you're right with the dating early-mid 20th century. 😀

@bartholin Thank you so much.  Yes I’m even more convinced this is a domestic market piece 1920-1930.
