Hi,

In my opinion t looks okay for Shunzhi, but I am not too certain about the face or the lid, they look a bit sloppy to me. At the same time I do very much like the foot and I think it is potentially good. I hope Stuart can come along and enlighten us, I take his word as gospel.
Cheers,

jeremy

I think it’s a modern copy it doesn’t look correct according to my books these pieces should always have that blueish tint.

I have doubts. My impression is the painting is rather more blotchy than well-shaded. Also have you seen other pieces with the leaves (?) pointing up at the neck instead of down? The lid shape looks different to Brian's examples, too.

Those things may be fine, I don't have the expertise to know, hopefully Stuart will see this.

@julia some examples for the 2nd question

I agree that the painting is less impressive as all commented. Thanks

Well that solved that question!  Those are lovely comparison pieces and do indeed show the painting as less impressive.

I did wonder after I had posted this morning, whether the lid might be a later replacement, but now it is in front of me again, it does appear to  match well and I have seen transitional wucai jars with similar-shaped lids.

That really leaves the painting.  Maybe this is a good comparison piece?  I am still unconvinced.

@zhtail

Hi Yi -

Just for comparison …

Attached images/descriptions of some differing vessels from the Chongzhen and Shunzhi periods decorated with Qilin/flames amongst plantain trees, rocks, plants and grasses, from the Shanghai Museum, Buttler Collection, and a private HK Collection. The last two dishes offered at Bonhams, London in November 2011/12 …

This Qilin motif, either singular or with other auspices animals, was very popular during the mid 17th century and numerous examples are known. The painting style, as in all periods, can vary considerably, the cobalt tone less so although occasionally there are slight variations …

However the motif detailing is very similar during this time, as is the application and cobalt shading, and both seem somewhat lacking on this jar/cover …

If possible, could you post images of the  design/s on the other side, the Qilins tail, and the jars interior? …

Hi Jeremy -

You are far to kind …

As with everyone here, we can only express our ‘opinion/thoughts’ on the images posted, so always highly subjective, based on our previous experiences, primarily of objects/pieces known of, seen and handled over many years …

@ming1449 stuart, you are so knowledgeable and kind. Attached are some pictures . Far from the examples you shared earlier. Maybe by an apprentice. 🙂

Hi Yi -

Thank you for the additional images posted, most helpful …

Note the differences in the drawing/detailing seen in the Qilins main and tail, the leaves/trunk of the plantain tree, or the overall cobalt application/shading of the Qilins body scales, rocks or flames, all very different and slightly careless on your jar and the comparison examples …

Personally, I do not think this is a mid 17th example but a later copy, IMO, but lets see what hear others thoughts after seeing the additional images kindly posted …
