Can anyone say with certainty if this is Tongzhi mark and period or not, and state your reasons for or against. Looking forward to hearing your assessments. Thanks! John
In my opinion your item bears the Tongzhi mark 1862-1875. It was fairly common practice during the guangxu period 1875-1908 to also use the Tongzhi mark. However most marks made during the guangxu/later period were stamped rather than hand-drawn. Your example is hand-drawn.
The design and shape is very typical of tongzhi wares. There are a couple of things against it being mark and period imo. First is the colour of the base. It's a very distinctive blue whereas most are bluish-green. See example below. Second is the base rim. On most tongzhi period bases they are very harsh and rough. On later guangxu period they are not. Your example appears to be rather smooth. Below is an example of a mark and period base.
It is difficult to pin down exactly if it's tongzhi or early guangxu. Your pictures are not very clear and crisp. In conclusion imo I thinks that its probably early guangxu period rather than tongzhi.

@shinigami I also just noticed those dots when I looked at the picture, so I'm not sure if they can be cleaned off or not.

@imperialfinegems So I could probably pick this up for around $50. I get the sense that would be a good buy and that I could turn around and reliably sell it for a profit. Do you concur?

I am not up to date with the pricing of these. However, my gut tells me it is OK for $50. You should be able to turn it around for a profit provided there is no damage or repair etc.
I have included a couple of similar period pieces for you. The first is currently available via rubylane. The other was at catawiki and sold for €120.
The one you are looking at is imo superior in the depictions of the Phoenix and foliage.
Just my thoughts.

johnshoe, I have never done one either. I guess a certain amount of trust is involved. You would have to check the item for any chips, cracks, etc. and find out how much it would cost to ship insured to Texas 78704. I would think we could arrange payment through Venmo. We would have to exchange email addresses to arrange details. If you think that miight work, my email is gctodd at yahoo dot com.

@cashflowz I'll see if it is still available and then let you know. It seems like it is in fairly good condition but I will look it over good if it's still there. Do you only want pieces without any flaws at all or are minor dings, etc. still okay with you? John
John, I guess it depends on the piece as a whole. I do not want chipped pieces, unless very small dings, but glaze frits, bubble bursts, etc. are usually OK. I know this one has some kind of spots on it that were discussed here.
