I am no expert but it looks fairly modern to me. The dragon appears to possibly be printed then washed in, or transfer printed, and the hollow legs must mean this is moulded. Is that right? The white glaze looks modern, too.
I can only think this may be purely for decorative/tourist purposes as hollow legs don't seem very practical.
I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. 🙂

Hello all. Julia you said transfer printed and washed in. I looked that up and it says you will see dot matrix or crisscross pattern. Will the washed in remove signs of these. Here are some more close-ups. Sorry for the questions, just trying to learn. Thank you for the help.

Have you been reading the articles on chinese porcelain .com? They were around years ago and may have been useful twenty years ago when the copiers were not so sophisticated; now I think all the signs of age they mention, like inconsistent size of the glaze bubbles , rust spots, iron oxide lines, glaze crackle, while useful , can all be mimicked/replicated by modern copiers .
The bubbles here are just an effect of the very thick clear glaze applied over the cobalt, which makes the blue 'recede' and blur.
Suggest you look at the artistic side of the piece - its shape, for example, is quite squat and not elegant or refined. It has a heavy mouth and rim. It is not the work of a skilled potter.
It seems hand painted to me but the painting is crude, the dragon claws for example, its hands, the scales on its body , all are painted very casually and without finesse. The colour of the blue , especially on the legs , is not correct for an old object, too dull and washed out and inconsistent. The circular indentation on the base is not normally found on old Chinese porcelain objects, and suggests this was made in a mould.

Thanks for the better pictures, it isn't transfer printed but it could be a printed, maybe stencilled, outline that is then washed in. The reason I say that is because there doesn't seem to be much evidence of brush strokes, the lines are very flat. However, as I said, I am no expert and it could well be hand-painted. It isn't easy to tell and not all printing shows the evidence you refer to. On transfer-prints, you will see mismatched areas which is the main clue, especially with continuous patterns such as on old English willow pattern plates, for example.
However, what you can do is look at the whole piece, as Tam has said. Even if this is hand-painted, it has little artistic quality or functional use and is definitely modern. It takes a while, but if you look hard at older examples, the way they were painted, the colour palettes and shapes, you will start to get a feel for when something is modern and of little artistic merit.
