I have quite a bit of porcelain hanging around that I have picked up at thrift shops and yard sales over the years, and I hope you all don't mind helping me identify some of it.
So here are 4 canton rose pieces. One was "decorated in Macau", the two octagonal ones were made in China (any idea around which decade?) And the bowl has markings on the back and is only painted on the sides.

I’ve always assumed these were 1970s versions of 19th century one? I don’t know it for a fact, but I remember lots of people having them in their houses when I was a child and they were considered ‘ornaments’ as opposed to ‘antiques’.

The first two plates seem to be republican period. Made in China marks were required for imports after 1926ish. The Japanese ... mark was used after 1950 after the Korean War started. Porcelain imports from China was banned due to the war. Therefore companies had to get porcelain from Japan and then decorate them in Hongkong or Macau. Such practice lasted well into 1970’s.
I have a bowl in this design, and my bowl has a made in China mark which I placed at 1960.
No doubt you can see how similar these two designs are....My bowl below. The bowl is very heavy and excellent quality in terms of construction. Just a great bowl 🙂 Cheap and cheerful and very strong.
Yes, I understood that the ‘Made in China’ or ‘CHINA’ marks aren’t a great indicator of age as they were used for a long period of time, spanning several ‘periods’? The decoration, specifically the quality and characteristics of decoration, are the best indicator of age?

as to the octogonal plate: there was a short revival of Rose mandarin in the 1930s with rather low painting quality. I would date the plate in this time. Later examples that some of us remember as (rather ugly) decoration items from the 1970s/80s look more like this, the style being different from the old Rose mandarin:

However these are much nicer, from Nisbets Steelite, designed for the bar and restaurant Trade.
Have to buy in batch At 215 euro, works out at 17 euro per plate, but they are impressive.
