Hello everybody, I've come across these two bowls one with a tenmoku/jian style glaze and the other with a jun style glaze. I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell if they are modern like I sort of suspect, or if they have some age at all. Thank you for any input you might have, it's greatly appreciated.
I think the first place to look is the base /footrim and both here to me look very new - you could compare with photos of genuine tenmoku/jun wares on the major auction houses' websites. The base and foot lwill look different between new and antique items .
I'm sure also the glaze characteristics , rim and interior and wear patterns also are different on new and old items but that is harder to judge , imo.
Jun style blue wares in particular are highly valued in China , so they are still being produced, not as fakes or attempts to deceive but as attractive ornametal items for the home /office etc. Probably they are not diffcult to make now and so are relatively affordable - so there are lots around.
tam
Yes, agree with Tam, both them are absolutely modern at first glace under every aspect.
Regards,
Giovanni
They are nice, aren’t they? I really like this style. Even the modern ones, like these, are appealing to me. I may get a few for every day use.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hello all,
How about this one? Genuine/later/modern?

Dear Adrian,
unlike the two bowls shown previously, which are just modern, or at least not necessarely made to deceive IMO, your one is a fake, made to deceive, sorry.

Giovanni
Hi Giovanni,
Many thanks for coming back to me with confirmation - it doesn't belong to me but I was interested in placing a bid on it - not anymore 🙂
All the best,
Adrian

Hello Adrian
The Freer and Sackler show a large range of Jun ware in their online collection and most pieces also show the foot.
It seems to me that Yuan dynasty bowls have a similar style foot to your bowl and some have a shiny glaze, but Yuan bowls appear to be more heavily potted. The finer potted bowls seem to be Song dynasty pieces, but also tend to have a dull glaze with a finer formed foot.
Kind regards,
Jeremy

Dear Jeremy,
Thank you very much for your comment. I do admit I am not that confident yet it identifying these type of wares correctly. To be fair with you, I find it quite difficult at this stage and yes, I made few mistakes already (cheap ones, I do not risk proper money if I am not at least 90% sure I know what I am buying). On the other hand I do own few bowls (not exactly that style) and I am absolutely sure they are dated correctly as 16/17th C and I must say that the foot does not appear to me as the strongest attribute I would base my dating on - I think you feel what I mean.
And the bowl I have pasted pictures of - I was quite sure it was a real one and I was just about to place a bid on it and Giovanni's comment was a bit of surprise to me.
Thank you for mentioning F&S collection, I am browsing it now and indeed there are some good examples to study.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi teloque, all -
Not really my area so will I’ll defer to Tam and Giovanni but, just for comparison, attached images/description of a superb blue glazed, purple-splashed Jun bowl with wonderful provenance exhibited in London in 2016 ...
Stuart
Hello Stuart
Now that is a superb bowl, doubt that anything similar will show up on eBay.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Dear Adrian,
be sure that it is good that you have not bidded on it.
I am absolutely sure that it is a fake.
Is it on ebay?
Giovanni

Hi Giovanni,
Thanks again, I appreciate it. I do not spend on ebay a lot of time, usually I roam it with around 2-3 months intervals - that's what I do when I take a brake from visiting fairs. Yes, I found it recently on ebay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chinese-Antique-Purple-Splashed-Jun-J%C5%ABn-y%C3%A1o-Glaze-Stoneware-Bowl/174191393860?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
I didn't like the colours, that purple smear looked odd and the rim as well, wasn't sure about the crackled glaze as it's fairly easy to fake, but the foot I must say looked not bad to me - I was quite sure it looked at least 19th C - hence my surprise.
This weekend I was looking what's there listed on UK's ebay and for example the 'Kangxi' results shocked me - the amount of fakes is just endless.
Regards,
Adrian

Strangely all my Kangxi pieces on EBay Uk are genuine but no interest from buyers.
Perhaps I should stock up on fakes like the top sellers.
Vic
Hi all,
Again just for comparison, attached images and description of a much smaller Jun ‘bubble’ bowl from the same 2016 exhibition ...
This piece shows the more typical glaze finished around the base/footrim ...
