Hi,
Does anyone have any thoughts on this very (artificially?) worn dish, please? Is it Swatow? I have never actually handled any so have no idea, but the colours make me think it might be.
It is very large about 15 ins across, quite thinly potted, rings beautifully, feels heavy, very gritty base.
Thanks for your help.
Julia
These can probably be enlarged as I took them this morning - also the plate is rather wonky:
My other thought was Japanese as the flowers' leaves looked like the one on that blue and white stemmed bowl that Grace posted. However, that base? The size and no spurs? The wear? Maybe not.
Hi Julia,
Wow, that’s a lot of kiln grit! I’ve never seen a Japanese one like that. My amateur guess is Chinese, as you also speculate. The deer looks Chinese, doesn’t it? There is a type, or maybe more than one type of Japanese porcelain in which the enamel wears off quite a bit. I have a few pieces, but I don’t think this is that. Although I don’t think I’ve seen one in which it is almost completely gone in the center, as your’s is. But maybe that speaks to its age.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
you could do a search on red/green swatow , which is definitely a thing, and has featured before here on a much earlier thread. The kiln grit almost completely obscures the footrim , which looks as though it could have been entirely glazed , or maybe it was very thin. It should be quite easy to compare the foot with ming swatow pieces. The dish definitely does not look new , nor artifically worn
tam
It looks like a typical Ming Swatow plate to me. Because the colors tend to wear off, these plates are sometimes repainted before selling which gives them an artificial modern look. And I don't know if they're still collectable if they're overpainted. But your plate shows traces of wear, that means people have liked and used it. A lot of kiln grit at the bottom, but it looks perfectly authentic to me.
Birgit
Julia,
As Birgit has said, what you have there is a Chinese Swatow plate with over 400 years of wear. Imagine the number of hot noodle dishes that were served over time causing the center wear. I believe these were also exported to Japan in numbers as I see them turning up from Japanese sellers where the red/green pallet was very popular.
George
Thanks everyone! I know it is worn but I want to own it and it has what I think is relatively low opening bid of £25 on an estimate of £40 to £60. It is described as famille rose. It feels beautiful. I will let you know.
Thanks for your help. ?
