Looks to be a brushpot with a variation of ‘sang de boeuf’ glaze.  It doesn’t have the typical Kangxi glaze characteristics of pulling away from the lip to expose the white body and also is not pooling at the base. This is a Kangxi period example from the Sam Marsh book “Brushpots, A collector’s view”.

@superox

A characteristic of the late Qing ‘sang de boeuf’ glaze is typically running over the foot and requiring extensive chipping/grinding to tidy up the base of the ceramic piece.  This was caused by a re-formulation of the glaze in the late 18th century.  Not seeing much evidence of glaze overflow on you piece.

My 2 cents it’s not Kangxi and it’s not late 19th century. My concern is the glaze looks like modern glaze but this could be a effect of lighting and camera. So better pictures in natural light will help. Now the label these can be faked but your label is written in the old way. Later period label spell Kangxi differently. Now I look at the foot this foot is trimmed correctly and shows signs of kiln temp drop from a wood kiln. So if not Kangxi and not late Qing where does that leave us. My opinion is late 18th to early 19th right before the glaze transition. Better pictures need to be taken. These wares are being heavy copied by the modern copies can’t get the glaze right it’s thick and distorted. Let’s see if we can narrow the time down.

@superox -

Hi Al -

For comparison:-

Attached images/descriptions of two Kangxi period brush pots, first in the Gugong, Palace Museum Beijing, second from a private Hong Kong collection …

Concur with both William and Brian and points mentioned, certainly not Kangxi period …

If the word across top part of label reads ‘Eskenazi’, then it’s a faked …

Agree with Brian, much better images in natural light are required …

I think that the scratches on the bottom look contrived, as does the dirty foot. I don't find the glaze color or quality to be convincing for an antique item, nor do I think that looks like authentic kiln grit. I would suspect it is likely a modern reproduction made to deceive.  John

This monochrome is not Kangxi period. In my opinion it's a fake from the later 20th century.

Fake label!!!

Please do not buy this.

I would say, the brush holder is overly curvy. Most likely it is a modern copy.

@superox

Hi Al -

The form/shape is known, commencing during Shunzhi continues into early Kangxi periods, so around 1650-70’s …

The overall shape/proportions are different on authentic pieces; attached images of three such examples, Shanghai Museum collection …

I have not included the detailed descriptions, including potting, glaze, trimming/finishing and footrim/base characteristics of these pieces, as it is well known the copyist and fakers read such forums, but all three exhibit some differences …

Concur with Mark @imperialfinegems - tread very carefully …

@lep

I guess its really part of the learning curve ...just need to limit the "fake" purchase price...

chinese ceramics are not like ETF or technology shares you can just flick in and out, a bad purchase can make it almost unrecoverable...but at the same time... it will reinforce the importance of learning .. or they would call it connoisseurship (had to google spell check this...)
