Hi,
Here is a little "white jade" plaque I found.
There are a couple of scratches on the back so I assumed it is fake jade. However, I did a scratch test and, assuming I did it correctly, no mark appear. Yet it doesn't feel particularly cold to the touch, or heavy, so I'm a little concerned about it.
Guessing this is quite modern, nothing special?
Sorry the pictures are so dark.
Asher
Hi Asher,
The images as described are not the best.
Highly probable to be nephrite jade. Could be Russian white jade which is rather a stark white. Popular with Chinese carvers.
If it was white serpentine (Afghanistan) then it would have scratched/marked using a blade fairly easily.
Not old. From the 2nd half of the 20th century.
Would need higher quality images to confirm.
Mark
Hi Asher,
Thank you for the additional images.
Jade is difficult to photograph. Especially white. Always best to photograph against a dark background. Preferably in a natural light.
I still think it is highly probable to be genuine jade. Serpentine is a softer stone that can be easily scratched. Revealing either a white or blackish line. So since you were unable to scratch it means that its probably genuine.
Serpentine often has white blotches. Bowenite often sold as jade is a slightly harder stone but from the same family as serpentine. But its highly translucent in areas with blotches.
I still can't make up my mind as to whether or not its Russian white jade or other. I am leaning towards it not being Russian jade. Which is good.
Russian white jade is plentiful and a favorite for carvers. The prized 'mutton fat' white chinese jade is/slightly more mellow in colour and highly prized.
Your pendant/plaque is nicely carved and I think it is from the second half of the 20th century.
Nice example.
Congratulations!
Mark
Thank you for being so helpful!
Really interesting stuff, I didn't realize the differences between these different types of white jade... Shows how little I know about this stuff. Happy to learn, though!
I'll have to take a look at it in natural light tomorrow. Thanks again!
Asher
Hi Asher,
Serpentine or bowenite is often referred to as new jade or Korean jade. Its not obviously. Just a term.
Bowenite is primarily whitish with high translucency throughout with blotches of white. Serpentine can be found in various colours. The two most popular are green and white. Slightly lower Mohs hardness than jade and will leave a white line when scratched.
Just to make things more difficult is royal serpentine. Highly translucent green and lookd very much like imperial jadeite. Nearly impossible to distinguish between them by way of images.
These are a fraction of the price of the genuine article. With the exception of royal serpentine. Sought after for obvious reasons.
Royal serpentine:
My imperial jadeite guanyin:
White or Afghanistan serpentine :
Russian white jade:
Highly prized white jade. From the Qianlong period.
Bowenite carving:
A Ming/Qing white jade scholars rock that I own:
One of my favorite pieces. A late Qing early 20th century greyish-white jade carving depicting a mythical animal on bamboo. Later converted into a toggle.
It can be difficult to distinguish between them all with images. One needs to examine the carving itself.
@imperialfinegems Yes, the carving is much better quality than the serpentine pendants that were popular accesories at department store jewelry counters in the eighties and nineties, and yes the serpentine carving was no where near the quality of Asher's carving.
Wow, thanks to you both for teaching me so much with this thread - I feel very fortunate to be able to share this piece and learn so much from it!
The pieces you own look really great! This thread has made me wonder why I haven't invested into learning more about jade earlier... How old is that Guanyin?
Not sure if it will be very helpful in determining conclusively whether it's Russian jade or "mutton fat", but I just took two photos of it outside in natural daylight.
Hi Asher,
Its in my opinion highly probable to Russian jade. Its really difficult to determine by way of the pictures. It needs to be handled.
As it is a modern carving it's highly probable to Russian jade.
It doesn't really matter. It's a beautiful example.
The guanyin imperial jadeite is from the late 20 century. It was originally purchased in 2001 from a Hong Kong dealer for $440,000 hkd.
A few of good books for you are the following.
Jade by Roger Keverne. This one is excellent for newbies. With great pictures and information. You can buy thid on eBay from about 50 usd up.
Jessica Rawson book on jades is used by all the major auction houses like sotheby's etc. It's out of print like the one from Roger. But you can still buy it on eBay but not cheap. From about $100 usd up.
This one I recently purchased from eBay for about $15 usd. Some great pictures but its in Chinese unfortunately.
You need to handle as much as you can rather than looking at books. Major auction houses like sotheby's hold regular auctions with jades that you can hold them.
Mark
Thank you for the book recommendations - I will be sure to take a look at them.
As for the Guanyin, that is pretty remarkable and really, really neat.
If I'm ever in town for a major auction I will be sure to hold as much as I can.
Asher
