I found a scholars brush washer I’m trying to figure out the date and wood of the base it’s very lite weight smooth it is hand carved not tooled.
Since I see no visible grain, the color is rather light, and the carving is deep and highly detailed, I believe the wood is boxwood.
@greeno107 your right it’s looks like boxwood any clue as to age? Thanks
Is this a brush washer or a elaborate stand of sorts? Perhaps even a paper weight.
I agree it's highly probable to be boxwood.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Hi Mark it’s a brush washer base I was trying to date the piece by the base here’s the rest.
@lotusblack That looks like amethyst quartz or purple Fluorite, except fluorite is only a 4 on Mohs' hardness scale, while amethyst is 7-7.5 on the hardness scale, so I'm not sure they would have used soft fluorite to make a brush washer, so probably quartz, a very pretty piece both the stand and washer. Sharon
@sharonp it is Amethyst Someone put work into these two married pieces. The lotus stand connects to the lotus carved on the stone to complete a flower. Very cool.
Hi Brian,
I thought I posted a reply. But obviously forgot to hit the save button.
It's a beautifully carved lotus leaf out of amethyst.
In my opinion it's 19th century.
Here is one from sotheby's that had a dyed ivory stand from the Qianlong period.
Mark
@imperialfinegems thanks Mark I paid out of my comfort zone but hey it’s treasure to me.
@imperialfinegems if I was to sell this what would be a guess. Nothing to compare it to Sotheby’s is 18th century another was late 20th century and that’s about it online. So I know it’s rare I’m in agreement it’s 19th century I did find a Ming jade carved very close but it seems this pattern was popular for a long time.
Congratulations on a fabulous find! It looks like the amethyst brush washer is a lotus leaf, with a frog perched on one edge and a lotus blossom peeking out at another edge, and the wooden stand is configured as stems rising from the mud, surmounted by another leaf, a blossom and a bud, amid swirling water. You should really hold onto it.
John
@jjytlee thank you I believe your right I will be keeping this piece in my personal collection for now I just need to find an insurance value. I’m thinking I would not come across another to get a comparison value so I might have to pay for another appraisal they are getting to add up.
Hi Brian,
Perhaps in the vicinity of $5000 for insurance/replacement value.
I think the one at christies, being Qianlong with ivory stand sold for about 35k.
So how much is a 19th century one worth. It's very subjective I submit.
I dont have any amethyst carvings. They have for the most part been sought after over recent years.
Does this value conform with your thoughts?
Mark
@imperialfinegems Mark this find is partly because you have given us the needed information to check for modern tooling. I researched the two Jades I bought with expert help books and your post. With my own determination I believe my small jade is 19th century I believe the Jade you didn’t like is 1980. The reason is I found one area that I thought looked like modern tooling. But it could be old drill mark and I just not experienced yet. But the brush washer is showing me the difference in old methods this is why I feel the one jade is a modern carving. It’s very blocky not refined if you get what I’m saying I own another brush washer that is Rose it’s obvious a modern carving just poorly executed.
Hi Brian and Lee,
The lotus leaf carving is on line with similar carving. It's difficult to determine exactly the age because of the way its been carved. If you understand what I am implying. Taking the carving and it's stand it's highly probable to be 19th century. Its certainly not a modern interpretation.
The color is also good. It's bordering on high end amethyst. But it has obviously numerous outer flaws with colour and russet. It's not a big deal btw. Just an observation.
Pricing them is difficult as I don't normally deal in them. That's not suggesting I would not buy it. It's just I have never been offered one. I am currently looking at a amethyst carving from the 19th century. It's estimated at $2000-3000 aud which is about $1500-2000 usd. But that's estimates at auction. Not reflective on market value as you both know.
There are a lot of jade dealers in the market. Unfortunately some have no idea about what they are talking about. Point-in-hand is that carving I thought was modern that you posted. The quality of the carving was terrible and indicated fast carving. This was not possible in the 19th century. Jade for the most part is precious and requires a good carver. Just compare for instance a jade censer from the 19th century with one from the 2nd half of the 20th century.
It's a beautiful carving and in the right setting would look fantastic. Especially with other scholar objects on a nice table.
I agree with John. You should keep this one.
I am still thinking about an appraiser for you. I think preferably online one etc.
Hope this post meets with both your approval.
Mark
