So this comes from a friend of my grandfather who lived in China briefly at the turn of the 20th century. From what I recall, the story was that he had been given this as a piece for his desk, something to reflect upon, by a poet who he had become friendly with. I do not know much else, however my grandfather had kept it on his desk, and to me as a child and still, it was always a lizard on a branch.
Just wondering if anyone knows what wood this is?
It appears quite old, and the white bits that you can see in the pictures is old wax of sorts I have since removed.

Hello Jeremy ,
Have been studying your photo's for a day or so, think your object may be older than you suspect. It looks like a piece of fossilized or petrified wood with some sort of insect larvae that has been preserved by the natural wood resin. I could of course be totally wrong. Think this object needs to be looked at by a natural history expert rather than a Art expert. Maybe you have a local natural history type museum that could have a look they should be able to easily tell you if I am leading you in the wrong direction.

Michael, you are such an optimist. I like your attitude. You know a lot more about wood than I ever will, so I don’t know whether you might be right or not. Interesting theory though! I love how dark most of the wood is... almost looks burnt. And then the contrasting lighter colored area that Michael has pointed out. Really an interesting object. The lighter area does look similar to the bark of burl wood. Not sure if bark is the right word.....the outer area. I found a lovely burl wood tray a few weeks ago but didn’t post it because I knew what it was. So, no good excuse to share it. 😋 But I guess I could ask about the age. Hope you are able to find out more about it, Jeremy.

I am sorry I did not respond sooner, for some reason when signed out I cannot see what has been newly written. Thanks for the natural history suggestion, I showed it to my friends father (he used to work at the natural history museum in DC as a curator years and years ago), and he thinks (not entirely sure), that it is an Asian hardwood burl, from the decayed portion at least 6-800 years old.... blows my mind it could be that old. He didn't see any sort of resin that has since become petrified, just that the wood has remained dense as it aged. Next week he will possibly have an answer for me on the type of wood. Hopefully I will soon know.
For now it is still a lizard on a branch.

Good to hear you have made some progress in identifying your item. It occurred to me that it could even be fungus. Chinese scholars collected Lingzhi fungus for their desks, might explain that white area on the wooden part. Look forward to the results from your friend.
