Hello,
I have this cup, that I am not really sure if it's genuine rhinoceros. It's about 10cm high, quite translucent but it was hard to capture it on pictures. I don't have experience with this kind of items. The general feeling is that it was made of animal origin material, not a stone, wood or anything artificial. At least that's my very general impression.
It has some nice floral motifs, but mostly mushrooms carving.
What do you think? Fake, real, old or (god forbid) not that old?

Not my area, but I thought I would kick of first.
If genuine rhino horn it will display a grain like circle with a dot in the middle. Since rhino/other horn contains keratin if you pour boiling water over it shall/should emit a rather odd smell of burnt hair and manure.
You could also take this sample to a Chinese herbalist who maybe able to identity said materia.
If genuine rhino this would be quite a find. There are as you know a lot of fakes out there made primarily from crushed wood combined with dry bamboo and finished with frog/other meat to give it the smell associated with rhino.

That would mean it was made of a huge chunk of amber. I am not an expert in that field but it seams to me that finding amber that large is not common at all. So I am not sure about that. I am Polish and we have quite a lot of amber in our country, so I am quite familiar with this material, it doesn't feel and look like amber to me. When I picked that up instantly I felt I am holding something more of animal rather than plant origin.

You are probably right, but there are examples of larger pieces carved from amber.

I must admit, I am quite shocked seeing items of amber like that!
I think you might be right actually. And to be fair, I would prefer this cup to be made of amber rather then from an animal horn.

A density test should tell you if it's amber or horn. A since ambers density is very close to waters density it might be possible to make a "flow test". Just place the object in a bowl filled with tap water and then add table salt untill the solution is saturated. If it's amber it should flow on the water.
You're welcome. You might want to find an expert on amber to get it confirmed in a non-destructive way (given that Poland probably export a lot of amber, chances are that you should be able to find someone fairly easy). The test that 'avatar' suggest could also work, as long as there is no chance that the material could be something else that would be damaged by a saline solution.
I would probably also consider sending some of your pictures to either Christies or Sothebys (if you get a confirmation that the material is amber), might be worth it to get an opinion on the piece 🙂

I keep getting comments from different sources it's not amber but a buffalo horn. I also forgot to say that it smells quite intense.
