Dear masters and experts,
Seller says that it is made of a rhino horn. Is it true? How old do you think this object is? Thanks a bunch beforehand. luke
Hi Luke,
From the appearance said does not look like it is genuine.
From what I understand 90% on offer is fake (resin) and or Buffalo.
Judging by the poor carving techniques displayed I would suggest that said is fake.
How much is the seller asking for?
Mark
Hi Mark, is there any simple way to test whether or not a rhino horn is genuine without having to go to a lab? Tests like scratch test, burn test, etc? He is asking about 2000 usd
Hi Luke,
Tread with caution the item does not look right to my eye in shape or quality. Rhino horn has always been considered a extremely precious and valuable material and most items you see are only carved by master craftsmen. Also most countries have strict laws regarding the importation of Rhino Horn you would need plenty of authentic documentation as to the age of the item before crossing most boarders. I am interested in carving of all sorts I had a look through my archive could not find a horn to quite match the one you are looking at, the attached link is the nearest sold by Christie's some ago. I think you will agree the Christie's one is much better carved more like what you would expect for Rhino Horn.
Michael.
Hi Michael, I totally agree with you and Mark. The carving on the bowl I posted is not well done. Much inferior to the one on Christie's. But I also learnt that not every carving on a rhino horn has always to be an A+ grade.
Mark, coz you mentioned about buffalo's horn, I made me want to check what it'd look like in a product like cup and bowl. And it turns out that it is very different to the one I posted here both in color and hue. And I do not know if resin has the same color and texture as a rhino horn. Is so, should a scracth/hardness test be the next move? What's rhino horn hardness level?
If it turns out that it is resin, then case's closed. But let's say, if it turns out that it is not resin, then is it possible that the bowl is really of a rhino horn despite the not-so-well- done carving? luke
Luke,
Hot pin or burning may tell you if it is natural material as apposed to a synthetic resin. However it won't tell you from which animal it came from. In any case makers of resin fakes are clever they add lots of bronze or iron powder to the mix so resin items can pass superficial metal detecting tests. I would not be surprised if they can add sufficient ground up bovine bone so that the hot pin test produces smoke and burning as apposed to just melting. I would ask myself why would a dealer even of low rank offer me something for a 10th of it's potential value.
I think that the only sure way you could be absolutely sure is with an accredited laboratory test.
Michael.

Hi there,
Because it is $2000 it would be worth the $10 to get Bidamount to look at it if you’re still considering purchasing it?
Nic
Sounds a little more complex than I originally thought, Michael. I guess you are right. A reputable lab would be the sure answer.
Hi Nic, do you mean bidamount can give us an authenticity/appraisal certificate or letter just by looking at pictures?
Yes, maybe! If it’s something they’ve seen before, maybe several times, they’d recognise it immediately? Equally, if they haven’t, they can advise you if it’s worth the cost of testing it?
If, for example, Bidamount says it is not Rhino horn, or that even if it is, the quality is poor and you’re better off buying something else, that may help you decide if it’s worth proceeding?
Ultimately, even before testing, if several experienced people tell you it is not worth buying, would you want to proceed? I’ve used the Bidamount service several times on higher value items - I always learn something, even if I ultimately don’t buy the object.
Bidamount could also say that it’s very unusual and worth testing, I don’t know. But, personally, I’d prefer to have opinions from many different sources before going to the trouble and cost of having it tested.
The choice is yours of course.
Nic
Thank you so much, Nic!
Hi Luke -
Not really my area - but I have seen/handled a number of genuine rhino horn pieces in both the auction rooms and private collections over many years and I would agree with Mark's and Michael's comments, this looks fake, IMO ... Leave well alone ...
Stuart
Thank you Stuart, Mark, Michael and Nic. I am leaving it alone. Warmest regards, luke
