I was at one of my picking spot yesterday and found this reverse painting. Late 18th century to early 1800. Most likely by a Canton artist. I have been on the lookout for a reverse painting from this time period but did not think of this subject matter as Chinese export so I was a little surprised.
Beautiful. I keep looking out for reverse paintings, but have only found really ugly, poor quality ones. How big is it?
@kirby13 She is about 10 inches. I read a very interesting article that these were not mass produced but copied from small oil paintings that the western merchants would have Cantonese artist paint on glass in the Cong complex which makes these somewhat rare.
Here's one I have if either of you are interested let me know. Sorry for the poor presentation it is taped down to a weird backing in the photo so try to disregard that. As I recall it's about a foot long. John

The odd shaped plaque is very nice.
Its probably Republican period... Not late Qing. From what I can see.

When the subject of a reverse painting is European, what are the signs that point towards a Chinese export vs. a European painting? I have this reverse painted family portrait that I suspected is European because of the initials, but have always wondered if maybe its a Chinese export.
I'm always looking to learn more, and appreciate your insights.

@happyholiday I think yours is French the rendering is how I spotted this to be Chinese. Even though the portrait is of a European woman you can see the Chineses traits in the face.
@lotusblack I am sure that you as an artist can see that the right arm of your lady is anatomically impossible, it would drive me crazy, but it has a charming naif quality, probably copied from a painting brought or sent by a Westerner. Many of the convex reverse glass paintings from the first quarter of the 20th century of American buildings such as the U.S. Capitol were actually painted in China. I once had a neighbor who collected those types.

Saw this in China for the West, thought it might be a good reference for you.
Thanks guys but I have come to the conclusion that my painting is actually a fake made probably in the last few years. I came to this conclusion yesterday after a good look at the glass it self. It is a modern glass due to the fact it has no imperfections I own Authentic pieces and the glass is obvious when looked at under magnification. So be warned that they are faking these now.
