Hello,

Hope you are doing well and having a nice weekend.

Would you be so kind and assist with this Republic Period mark, please?

I have checked all my references everything I have and after hours of browsing, I surrender. Is it a maker's mark or a date?

Also, an additional request with another Republic jar, I believe both are from late 1920s.

Does anyone recognize the artist?

With the 2nd one so far I was given those hints: 淺降彩 and 范永兴, so apparently Fan Yongxing, but is this Yong Xing Fa from that company operating in the Republic?

Though I can’t help with mark or inscription, I like the jars very much. 1920s and of above average painting quality.

They are a nice pair, Adrian. I would agree with Birgit as to the date and  I can't help with any of the writing, either, in fact, with those base marks, I am never sure if one is meant to read the red or the white!

Do you have lids for them?

Hi Adrian,

A couple of very nice republican period porcelain pieces you have posted.

We have a few linguistic members here. So hopefully they will post their thoughts.

Hello,

Someone told me the one with calligraphy is 'first year of Republic', I can't read that myself, so I just have to consider that as well. The style of decorations looks like early Republic. The previous owner listed both as 19th C, but that was obviously incorrect.

Kind regards,

Adrian

@julia

Hi Julia,

Thank you very much, I like them as well.

Unfortunately I don't have original lids, only wooden replacements.

@adrian I'd pass on these.  Strangely enough, while this style of Qianjiang fromthe Republic era is still relatively affordable, I've seen copies of these in some of the high end lamp shops in the Palm Beach market.

Let's look at the photo you posted, focusing on just the faces...

qianjian cropped jar

Here's a similar jar that sold on Etsy that I think is genuine...

Etsy jar

and the link to the Etsy jar so you can see the entire jar.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/579503544/antique-chinese-porcelain-famille-rose?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details

There is some variation in the rendering of Qianjian style, but the modern fakers are really exploiting the fact that the style is loosely rendered, mimicking brush painting.  However, in your example, the line work is soooo overly simplistic, it is hard for me to believe that it is genuine.  AND if genuine, it's offers nothing in artist value, so my best advice is to save your money for another piece.

Here is the link for Fan yongxing real piece: you can compare the face and painting style, and sorry to tell you that the signature does NOT match (similar though)

@greeno107

I have zero doubts two of mine are 100% genuine Republic period. I would tell you this blindfolded by just holding them in hands without looking at them once. Nothing indicates to me we're having at a copy here. The one from etsy you have posted is just a bit better with exactly the same faults in terms of typical for that period: clumsiness, overlapped lines, poor shading, etc. Also the glaze, paste, light celadon body, foot, all of that is identical as on my jars.

I find it a bit odd that fakers would get into producing jars like that, considering there is still a lot of them circulating. I'd rather expect them to copy more valuable pieces from that period (some are extremely expensive) with different motifs, not like those which I personally find very common and nothing spectacular to be fair. Also, those jars are still relatively cheap and you can find them everywhere, so if I was a faker, I wouldn't invest my time in that kind of stuff. However, nothing can surprise us anymore, I guess?

I'd love to see a modern copy of an item like that, as I have never seen such a thing.

Definitely, thank you for making me cautious. Too late, however. I bought them and I am happy with that purchase.

Kind regards,
Adrian

@adrian You ask...here you go!  These are fakes....took me 2 minutes to find.  With more time, which I'm not going to put myself through, I could probably find a very similar pair.

Sorry I was too late with my advice.

Dear Yin,

Thank you very much for sharing that. Unfortunately, the pictures are rather small and it doesn't help to compare the style of painting. To be fair with you, if I was a gambler I'd bet this jar you have shared is 1:1 with mine in terms of quality of decorations.

BTW, I am not claiming my jar was decorated by Fan Youngxing, someone has suggested that to me, so it's still an open question, my friend.

Send some larger photos, if you can, please, I am happy to compare and gain some knowledge.

Many thanks for reaching out, it's much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Adrian

@adrian yes, different, but they are clear evidence that Qianjiang pieces are being copied, which was my point.

My assessment of your jars was based purely on the rendering.

@adrian yes, different, but they are clear evidence that Qianjiang pieces are being copied, which was my point.

My assessment of your jars was based purely on the rendering.

The vases you have shown on 1stbids have nothing to do with the style, type and period of the jars I have. Not even close. You have said items like that are being copied to prove me that mine are fake, so regarding my jars, you have said: "it is hard for me to believe that it is genuine.  AND if genuine, it's offers nothing in artist value" - the second part I of that sentence I totally don't understand...
The example you have provided proves nothing regarding my jars. I can go on ebay now, type in 'Qing Chinese porcelain vase' filter only sellers from China and I could show you anything you could only want to see - it's all there. And it proves absolutely nothing.
The jars I have, the one from Etsy you have posted are nothing spectacular, just like I said before. But they are nice and not bad at all and most of all they are c100 years old, and they do have artistic value - very typical and common for items from that period.

That is a decent vase Malka and hope it turns out to be as Brigit suggests. I would also lean with Greeno and check out the PROC stuff but i thope Brigit's guess is right on this one.

I used to check these Gotheborg site, and they has some of these listed as people republic i.e 1950's, however now these are not on the gotheborg site, but they do have some from 1920 listed as tentative. I wonder if they had some kind of disagreement about the dating.

It used to show many of these Qianjiang styles dates as from the peoples republic 1950+ so while i would not say fake i might say it is possible some of these could be Peoples republic. Either way i am not sure why Gotheborg has such a problem dating them, I would think they might have figured the dates out, in any case gotheborg now lists them as tenative 1920.

Why i am mentioning this is that Gotheborg was actually a brilliant resources for Qianjiang style porcelain as it had a good resource of PROC dated images and this was very useful to pass/date/eliminate many otherwise republican looking items. It is a shame that has gone or moved to where i cannot find it.

So my advice would be to check PROC Qianjiang style pieces.
