@jbeer2121 Haha - the name of the auction house itself should be a warning - if you buy something there, you could have a heart attack!

A possibly authentic Yuan reverse decorated pear-shaped vase sold for one thousand dollars in 2021 and one of three pieces with a potential value of ten million dollars or more sold right in front of my nose that year for a thousand dollars each. The two others being a possibly authentic Ru piece and a Shang bronze vessel.

Speaking of Yuan ceramics. Apparently this jar has been sold at Nagel for €372,400. It is as iconic as anything. Only four similar jars with a heirloom status and only one at private hands as far as I know. It sounds incredible low. For an intact jar of this kind I would guesstimate the value to be around €15m or more.

A similar jar I was looking at. Appeared to be correct with the base and the interior, etc. but still most likely not a period piece.

Some years ago I had luck to buy a Yuan white-glazed (qingbai) 'guan' jar with similar incised decoration by the way. Very nice. Not sure if it's of the period though ...

Hi Cory -

The two guans and yuhuchunping you have posted are all reproductions, not Yuan period wares …

The Nagal example, if authentic and even with such reduced neck, would have fetch multi-millions …

Hi! And happy new year.

Are you certain the yuhuchunping is fake? Even without seeing the additional pictures and the base?

And are you also certain about the jar sold at Nagel?? I need to research it before I make my own conclusion. They also talk about it at the Chinese sites.

It had previously been sold in a smaller auction house in Belgium.

Hi Cory - and a happy 2022 also ...

'Painting/decoration style - first and foremost' ...

If you compare any of these three with genuine examples - the differences are obvious ...

Not sure if I agree with that. I've studied the pictures of the four heirloom jars and they are all different from each other.

Regarding Nagel there is also this Yongle style meiping which they had estimated at € 2000/3000. It is identical to a meiping sold at Sotheby's for HKD 168,660,000.

I've been wondering if it's the same meiping that appeared at a French auction this year with an €1/1,5m estimate but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Hi Cory and all -

For those here who may be unfamiliar with these exceptional rare Yuan guans with underglazed blue and red openwork flowers sprouting from rocks and framed within panels, attached images of the three authentic examples cited in the Nagal catalogue ...

1/2:- Guan excavated from the Baoding, Hebei Province, The Protection Centre for Cultural Relics, Hebei Province ...

3:- Guan in the Gugong, Palace Museum, Beijing, ...

4:- Guan in The Percival David Foundation, now held in the British Museum - the secondary designs to shoulder/base are more simplified on this piece ...

Images 5/6 is the guan sold at the Nagal, and 7 is the other guan posted by Cory ...

Compare and note the differences in the drawing of the scolloped waves/scattered lotuses on the shoulder, the chrysanthemums sprays atop the beaded panels, the execution of the red/blue flowers/leafs within or the classic scroll/lotus panels to lower base ...

And one in private collection that was purchased by Sakamoto Goro for a record price when it was sold at auction in the seventies. Can be seen here:
