Hello,
I have this lovely vase that was commonly copied and I struggle with accurate dating.
I keep finding them dated c.1970 however those seem to be of much worst quality and the lacquer looks exactly that old around 40-50 years when I find mine a bit older and closer to 1920 and also I think it has a finer detail.
What do you think?
Many thanks for your comments!

This is molded resin. Please take note of the burst air bubbles and mold lines highlighted in the photo below. The genuine carved lacquer vases from the 20th century tend to have blue counter enameling on the inside. Beware of these ones with gilded metal.

I have seen a lot of those made of resin and then covered in red or white paint but I have scratched this one in 2 spots and I can't get off a paint layer and expose resin base, I got like a thick solid mass
I don't think you're right my friend with this one.
Kind regards

I'm going to have to put you on my naughty list 😉
I don't know why I've bothered with the blue circles because the vase is absolutely covered all over with air bubbles and mold marks:
I guess you see what you want to see.
All the best.
No, not at all. Above most I appreciate the educational aspect - that's why we are all here. I don't want to see what I want to see, quite opposite, I want to see what I can't see because of lack of knowledge. Obviously you are absolutely convinced and I have to follow your advice and recognise this item properly.
You're right, there is way too many of those bubbles, genuine piece shouldn't have that - I was browsing now cinnabar items on Bonhams website where you can zoom in properly, they do have some small holes but not that many and not that visible.
Thanks for sharing with me your observation, 7 euros vasted 🙂
All the best.

I want to learn, too, so may I ask are the mold lines visible as squares (ie a criss-cross of vertical and horizontal lines) around the diagonal lines?

I would like to hear the answer to that as well as I struggle with finding that mould lines myself...
So far I was comparing this item with proper ones from major houses and all I can say is that those geometrical patterns are not straight, one could say that the maker quite visibly (depending on the craftsman's skills of course) is going off the straight line and the whole pattern has visible irregularities.

another way to distinguish resin and lacquer objects: real lacquer was applied in hundreds of layers , each one needing several days drying time , so wherever some detail like the flower is carved into the material then you should always see these very thin layers, going back from the surface into the object , as an indication of lacquer.
