Hello dear members
I have this vase from last few years it has a very genuine old look , glaze is broken corroded from few places like an egg shell .
it is very shiny vase ( that’s taking some clear pics was an issue )
an other feature ,there are two thin lines running in the middle of the vase having an inch distance like the upper and lower portion were wielded together , inside the vase are rust dots around .
The foot was sprayed black by the previous owner because they had kept it as a decoration piece for quite long time , I cleaned the foot and it is not very beautiful plus no mark .
this vase has lots of imperfections like even a brush hair is left at some place .
As I’m not an expert on Asian or any other ceramics , would love to have our experts opinion .
thanks
Thunderkakar
Any ideas !! ?
Thunderkakar
No sorry, to me it could be anything, even European. Maybe one of the many Japanese experts here has seen it before.
Birgit
Okay thank you very much
Probably it’s japanese
did you mean exactly this vase ? that some of the experts here might have seen before ?
Thunderkakar
Hi,
May I ask, what makes you think it’s Chinese/Japanese? Is it definitely porcelain? There’s something about the unglazed base and the way it has fritted on the rim that reminds me of a type of pottery or ‘chalk’ I’ve seen before.
The way it has been made in two sections is also odd. Even if a piece was made in two or more pieces, the join is easily removed before it is air-dried. Why is it still visible?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a small scratch test to the base? How hard is the material?
Nic
Hello Nic
I don’t know it’s Chinese or Japanese as I am really not an expert of ceramics , in my opinion only the shape and design looked Asian vase to me nothing else .
the scratch was a good idea from you I had a doubt is it even porcelain , but I tried to scratch the foot really hard with the tip of the nail cutter file it couldn’t scratch the vase but the file has a bit sharpen . It’s super hard and makes a sweet sound of porcelain upon hitting gently . The joint line is not visible easily it’s visible once you move it around to a shiny light there one can see a thin line but it can’t be felt upon touching .
Thanks mate
Thunderkakar
It's possibly not Asian , from the glaze and the base material and shape of the foot etc. The shape is similar to chinese forms of vase, but the proportions of the body, to neck and mouth look wrong ;
It could be a new Chinese made vase - something about the striped glazing looks familiar, but I can't think where I have seen this before.
tam
It looks familiar to me, too. I have been hoping it will come back into my memory - but it hasn't! I am also wondering if it is European.
So this vase goes to the non antique non Asian category . Thank you everyone for your opinion and kind replies
I’m glad to learn something from your experience .
Thunderkakar
The colours (in the darker photos and I don't know which ones are more accurate) remind me of 19th English/Scottish majolica but the closest I found was Roseville (USA). May be worth looking into all that?
Thank you Julia I will be comparing it with both of those you mentioned .
