Good morning,
I purchased this statuette. Could it be an authentic representation of Shou Lao from Qianlong/Jiaqing period?
Best regards,
Giliu
I wanted to add that there is wear present on some colors. For example, the ribbon on the back of the neck has lost its black hue. The glaze has small bubbles. There do not appear to be any marked wear scratches present. If more photos are needed please let me know.
Here’s a Jiaqing one from a reliable seller and you will see the difference in execution and posture. The dirty foot is also a warning sign. Don’t buy this piece, it’s made to look old but in my opinion isn’t.

@shinigami hi,
I found these: https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/ann-gordon-getty-collection-chinese-japanese-works-art-textiles/group-nine-chinese-export-porcelain-famille-rose-figures-immortals-975/162468 . it looks very similar, even as a posture. unfortunately there's no photo of the base, but finding similar ones they all look rough and dirty. do you say it's a dubious object anyway?
It is often useful to compare the way the hands are done and also, you can see the sharper facial features of the Christie's items. Was it sold to you as an old piece?
@julia yes.
indeed the facial features are different. could I have a thermoluminescence analysis done?
I wouldn't bother with that. It would be far simpler and cheaper to use the Bidamount Identification Assistant and you will get more than just an approximation of age. Obviously, make sure your photos are clear and show different angles, close-ups and from a distance. 😊
Where did you get it and how was it described?
@julia I bought it on catawiki.
It was described as late Jiaqing period. The seller was selling two, one apparently similar but actually different, because it had a painted but worn face and slightly deeper reliefs. I trusted him because I could not find any matching fakes for this type of figurine, they usually do not cost much and there are not many of them on the market. They usually forge more blue and white ceramics. Also, given the wear on the artefact, I thought it might be an original.
@julia The expense was not excessive, so having a laboratory close to home, and a voluminous base I could ask for a quote for a thermoluminescence analysis. If you need more photos of other details, I can take them as soon as I get home. The base is not dirty, only slightly, it is just raw yellow/red ceramic. There are signs of oxides and flashes. There are signs of glaze breaking during firing.
This piece looks to be a copy. I would pass if already purchased I would ask for a refund if possible.
I have been told that getting a refund on Catawiki is not simple if you are disputing the expertise.
You could ask for a quote for the test, but the result may not be specific enough to prove anything. Peter costs very little and you will get an expert opinion on the piece as a whole not a possibly vague date on the clay.
I have seen a couple being offered by Shangri-la that are described as being from the same period of yours, that are not as finely done as these other examples, but the pieces they reference as comparatives in the Rijksmuseum strike me as being better quality and they are earlier. I will post one of the two I found below (links to the museum pieces are below the pics), but whether this one is correctly dated I don't know. Also, was that base that yours has still used around 1820/30?
I honestly think Peter will be more use to you than an age test. As much as anything, from the video responses I have seen there is always something to learn.
Here is the piece:

Figure doesn't look as "new" knock off.
To compare with decent auction houses, it's not fair, as just very finest pieces are sold there (mainly). Many kilns, many different quality porcelain were produced.
@shinigami Birgit, TL test would not suit on this figure for 2 reasons: 1st: there are no area where possibly to drill 2 holes, as figure is way to small & possibility that figure will be damaged is high. And 2nd, it's not worth it, as TL costs +-300eur, for test itself, excluding, travelling or postage costs and time...And figure doesn't cost that much to spend so much on TL test. And in along run, if TL test would be done, there are no chance to obtain those funds back once figure sold sometime in a future if sold at all.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
