I purchased this bowl on a recent listing you might have seen it. I really don’t like to buy from online auctions when the price is high well anything is high if not authentic but I did pull the trigger. No one was trying to deceive because in the listing it simply was stated as antique bowl. Now that I have looked at it in person I’m interested in others opinion. The form is unusual and I do have an ideal what it is.

As you are about to slip off the first page, I will guess: finger bowl.

Do you really think it is an antique? It looks less than a hundred years old to me.

It looks to be Yuan in style but doesn’t appear to be very old.

Yuan style but not of the period. I agree with you both modern not antique it has zero ware I would expect some good scratches for sure. But the painting style looks above average to me. At first thought 18th century but it’s just to clean.

@lotusblack

Hi Brian,

This is a modern reproduction ...

The central peony composition, showing peony blossoms in four different views, copies a unique dish with identical design in Japan ...

The exterior decoration also copies a well known Yuan design ...

Hi Brian, Julia and Vic,

Just for reference:-

Attached image/description of large dish with near identical design to centre, Japanese  private collection, published in ‘Sekai Toji Zenshu’ Voll 13, 1981, (Ceramic Art of the World - Liao, Jin and Yuan Dynasties) ...

The peony scroll is one of the most used decorative motifs found Yuan wares, usually seen on the main body of guans, meipings or the cavetto of large dishes ...

@lotusblack

In addition, the bowl’s shape with notch above foot and flaring rims reminds me of many Japanese Imari bowls. Shape just not right for Ming.

@gfhandel @lotusblack

Hi George, Brian and all -

Regarding form, this bowl type, ‘zheyaowan’, was unknown during the Yuan and was one of the new innovative design first seen at the Imperial kilns in the Xuande period, so early Ming ...

They originally had lids and are decorated with various designs in underglazed blue, blue and iron-red and, occasionally, monochromes ...,

Attached images, all Xuande mark/period, from the National Palace Museum, Taipei ...

The shape is very rarely seen after Xuande ...

Hi Brian,

Re age: I do like the relaxed and flowing scrolls around the rim. It’s a good copy if it’s modern
