Hi All. I don't know if this pitcher is of any interest at all. It is about 8" long and 5" high. It is not a very graceful shape or one that I associate with Asian pottery, but I suppose it could be a provincial piece. It is thickly potted. The rough areas on the bottom are kiln grit--tiny rice-shaped grains which I have seen on Asian pottery before. It is extremely snow-white porcelain (see the damage on the spout) which makes me think it is modern. The thick felt pads are obviously modern. Any information would be welcome!
Thanks,
Charles
Hi Charles, the pattern is called pea flower and was popular in the 19th century for export to South East Asia. Your item was sold on Catawiki in November 2019. It’s not a pitcher.

Hi Charles,
Think you have a night pot. Perhaps from South China or points further south.

Hi Michael, the Wortpoint one is a nice example how patterns degenerated, from hand painted to simplified and transfer printed.
Birgit
Charles and Birgit,
If you can put the use out of mind. You could make a good collection they made them in B&W, Famile Rose, I have seen a few in fantastic shapes and glazes from the Shiwan Kilns. As @shinigami suggests you need to be careful and look out for the older hand painted ones. They also made them at the Bat Tran kilns in Vietnam and Cochin in Taiwan. Sometimes because of the use they are priced lower than buying a B&W vase or plate, not sure why people have collected western chamber pots for a very long time.
Michael
Hi Michael, I personally couldn’t forget about the use. Somehow revolting to me, like Qianlong bleeding bowls. But an opportunity to collect less expensive items, you’re absolutely right. By the way I have seen the female counterpart of Charles’ item in a book. These are more rare.
Birgit
Ha Ha Birgit, @shinigami
In the west they called the ladies ones bourdaloue they were made by all the great China makers of Europe Sevres, Chelsea, etc. You would need to be quite rich to collect them. I think Charles is going to be surprised when he comes back to his thread.
Michael.

@brettm I collected one because of Country Living Magazine in the nineteen-seventies, as they showed one peeking out from the end of a Victorian bed and I decorated our guest room as a Victorian bedroom, as there was an attached bath, it was merely a conversation piece. I also collected an old pap boat, used to feed the infirm and an English ironstone urinal in case I ever wanted to take as a teaching aid for life in the "good old days." I have never had any desire to live in the past, no thank you.
Hi, All. Yes, I am amazed that his sparked such interest, and yes, I am a little disgusted! Like Birgit, I cannot forget the use. Nice to know it wasn't junk, though--I was afraid no one would respond all, for fear of embarrassing me.
It is interesting how easy it is to find examples online, one you know the proper name for an item. And how hard it is, if you don't...
