Another weekend find. I found this little celadon vase at a local thrift store. It is a neat piece, with a transparent, crackly glaze, and an underglaze spiral incised into the body and up around the neck. I am thinking it may have some age, and possibly some value, because someone has repaired it. The repaired chip in the top rim is obvious, but the big repair is just above the spiral and below the dark glaze line in the neck, where the neck of the vase has been glued together. The vase must have been a little taller originally, and suffered a break in the neck. It was repaired by grinding the two pieces flat and rejoining them. The vase looks pretty balanced as it is to me, so maybe only minimal height was removed.
The vase has a huge shrinkage crack, and clearly was never used as a vase, because the crack goes all the way through--water pours out when you try and fill it!
The dark ring on the bottom of the vase looks like slag, and I am guessing it is the remains of a kiln ring. Some sort of kiln support must have been used, because the opaque, pale green glaze present on the foot in places runs onto the bottom the foot rim, but has nothing stuck in it or to it.
This doesn’t look Chinese to me. Any thoughts on age and origin of this damaged little vase?
Thanks,
Charles
Has a Korean look to me and the firing flaw on the side makes me wonder how it survived? Sharon
Looked at several celadon pages, no longer looks especially Korean to me, because the reddish clay is also on celadon from other places. I hope someone recognizes the style, still intrigued about what happened to it. Sharon
Hi Sharon,
The red is just iron staining that bled out of the porcelain during firing; where there are chips, you can see white porcelain underneath.
It is puzzling--why would someone go to the trouble of repairing a vase with such a large firing flaw? Perhaps it was recovered from a discard pile at a kiln site, and has sufficient age to be worth repairing... It was filled with dirt and clay, that I was able to wash out with some effort.
Charles
Perhaps this is Thai? I very much like it, and the form is interesting. I believe the iron leaching through during firing is common on the wares, and the striped or ringed neck is also more common.
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 The base of the spherical green Thailand bottle even has the same black firing residue on the base and the reddish appearance to the clay.
Thanks, Jeremy. That certainly looks reasonable to me; the foot rim and the spiral especially seem to match the Thai pieces I find online. So this would be "Sawankhalok"?
Most of those seem to be 14-15th century...is that the age of this piece? It still seems odd that it has survived for so long, and been repaired, with that huge firing crack...
Thanks,
Charles
I don't think it's Korean or Thailand. I think it's Chinese

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
