I just wanted to share the wood carving. It minimal but the faces look like they’re looking at you. Don’t know the wood species.
That is only based on the look of the grain. Hopefully, Michael might see it soon and have a better idea.
Hello,
Looks like some sort of soft wood. Think it may of been painted or covered with laqure originally. Have been seeing quite a few carvings recently that have that stripped or distressed look at places like etsy, ebay etc. Might be just a coincidence but is starting to sound a warning bell to me that they are making them like that new deliberately to give an aged look. Of course this figure if seen and felt in the flesh or the wood might give a different impression.
Michael
Here is a picture of bottom. I’m no wood expert but so I have no ideal of age or type of wood.
Sorry I know nothing about wood, but nowadays they can produce the most astonishing items obviously with the help of some machinery but a really nice finish. I just bought a cute little folding altar with three statues from this seller. For a dishonest reseller it would be no problem to add some traces of age to one of theise boxwood statues. This is not said against your statue Brian, as like I said I know nothing about wooden items. It’s just a field where in my opinion fakes can be more easily produced than in porcelain. Not sure if the link works, the seller is

Hello,
Think they use something like this with wood flour, with rubber molds that have wood grain incorporated. There is a video with the second link. So you can cast wood now days.

Thank you Michael, very interesting. When I get the item I will look at it with a loupe.

- I have my own theory on mine. I think it was carved it the states by a hobbyist. My mother in law did this hobby when she was alive. She had wood working tools they left marks just like the ones on mine.
@brettm so do they press a block and carve it it do the pour in a mold? Here is a grain shot.
Hello Brian,
Afraid I can't answer your question. Most of my working life involved working with timber. I did my apprenticeship making forms and molds out of timber for use in the die cast metal, and injection or squeeze cast metal and plastics Industries. From this experience if I learned one thing it is the time it takes to make something, from raw blocks of timber. As it turned out doing this apprenticeship turned to be a waste of time as by the late 1970's and into the 80's they had developed multi axle machines that could do most things that had previously had to be done by hand. With the further development of the computer chips CNC milling machines totally replaced my trade. CNC machines have largely been replaced by 3d printing now days. Seeing so many carved timber items on the market for ridiculously low prices, knowing how long it would take to make them by hand even at very low labor costs let alone the cost of material, I thought that it would be virtually impossible at these low price's.
This started me to think some of these things must be made by a industrial process somehow and with a little research I found the article's I posted above. How far these process are used and on what scale I don't know. If I find more information I will post.
As far as your caving is concerned I think it is hand carved you could be correct a hobbyist could of carved it in the U.S.A or anywhere in the world for that matter, my concern is that I am seeing a lot of carvings from China that have that stripped wood look recently and people are asking quite high prices for them as apposed to the low prices as per the items posted by Birgit. So two different area's involving timber. It is the amount of these stripped look items I am seeing at prices that would well cover labor cost and material that makes me think they are not as old as some sellers are claiming. You have the item in hand and you know where and when you came by it so I think you are in a better position to judge its merits.
Michael.
