Hey Folks,
Bought this as Thai... but it sure didn't look like that. the seller had other pieces, mostly export Ming jarlets and stuff and some SE Asia type wares. But this thing looks like Longquan, and I mean good Longquan.
My concern is more how nice it is, like the perfect Celadon, so of course that makes me suspicious. Funnily though there is convincing wear, and the paste and texture match my late song/yuan jarlets that I have, nice off white/gray color. I guess what I am saying is if its real its really really nice, and if its not they sure as hell tricked me, and I'm not all that mad about it... haha, its just a pretty little cup at that point.
All that aside, I have found an example, though later in the Sinan Wreck, similar dimensions, same floret in the middle, but more glassy dark green glaze, pic below. There is also one in the Art Institute of Chicago, same period and withing a few mm in height and width, but I can't find an interior shot. This seems its uncommon form wise, but definitely something that was made in the period, and yes I have seen the newer ones, but they just don't really match up to this.
Curious what you all think.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Dimensions are about 8.6-8.7cm wide and 4.4-4.5 tall...
A bunch of different lighting, but the real color is really a light blue green...
I like it. Would love to handle it. Can’t see anything from the photos that would obviously throw it out of the running.
Thanks for the offer! I would feel just like the Chinese collector drinking from his Ming chicken cup.
Likewise, if you are ever in Houston, let me know and I can serve you tea in one of my Song tea bowls.
Hi Jeremy, William and all -
Just for comparison, attached image of a very similar small Longquan cup attributed to Southern Song, in the Gugong, Palace Museum Beijing …
Jeremy -
Based on the images, as with William, I also can’t see anything that would immediately exclude this from been authentic but, obviously, it would need to be seen and handled to confirm …
My congratulations on acquiring …
Stuart
Hey Stuart,
Thanks! and thank you for the reference picture. I actually posted this cup on Gotheborg and I think the general consensus is that its late Song to early Yuan, 13th century, and from the Dayao Fengdongyan kiln. I think the one you posted is one of the Suining Horad cups, but I am not positive.
It seems this is quite rare, which might explain why I can't really find all that many comps. Obviously needs to be handled to officially make the determination, but with the large number of people who seem to think its right, I'm going with it being very likely legit, like 99.9%.
I did order the exhibition catalog on the Suining Horad so when I get it I will post any relevant cup.
And William,
Thanks!
I go to Texas enough( born in Dallas, familly in San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Galveston....) you'd think I would have have been to Houston but never have, I might just have to pass though on one of my road trips.
I love that white rimmed Cizhou bowl...
I definitely felt like a primo collector last night, for my mothers birthday, we drank a really lovely Port from the cup, seemed fitting. Haha if only I had a chicken cup on the table too!
Cheers,
Jeremy
Totally cool to have museum references, Pretty sure the one in the Art Institute is the only American Museum example, unless perhaps in an undigitized or small museum, or maybe in storage...
Jeremy
If by chance you make it through Houston, I can take you to Bayou Bend and we can look at their export ware collection. Not huge, but fairly choice.
I have always wanted to go there. John Guerrero sent me some photos, looks like a really great collection.
I would definitely take you up on that.
Thanks,
Jeremy
If you could retake some photos of this bowl under natural sunlight, esp the interior glaze hue, i could help share my thoughts, thanks.
I bought this tea bowl years ago from Mike Vermeer, a California dealer specializing mainly in monochromes.
For some reason, I can’t get the paste color correct without distorting the glaze colors. The paste is more chocolate brown in color.
@william it is nice and precious! I guess u spent some 5000-20000 USD? after cleaning it, you can try brew some low temperature tea with it, if you dare to try. It is worth the attempt. Jian tea bowls better the tea taste in subtle ways.
