I stumbled onto what I believe may be a rhinoceros horn boulder seal. It seemed from the listing photos that it was functional object with some significant age, handled and used a lot in it's time.
It was not until today that I found an archived auction listing showing a seal quite similar dated 16th to 17th century.
Would very much appreciate thoughts if mine could indeed also be a Ming period rhinoceros horn seal.
It would be great if someone might translate the seal script for me so that I can learn what it's intended use was associated with.
Any help greatly appreciated .

Your seal appears to have age related surface ware and I think it may be genuine rhinoceros horn from the suggested period . Perhaps send pictures to Peter for an opinion/further comment?

Turns out that it can be read, ying kui bai yin 英魁白印
But I can not make sense of it in English as there seem to be many meanings for each character.
英 pronounced in PinYin: "ying". Meanings: 1. a flower; 2. outstanding: 3. Britain
魁 pronounced "kui". Meanings: 1. chief, head; 2. big and tall; 3. the name of one of the stars in the Big Dipper constellation.
白 pronounced "bai". Meanings: 1. white; 2. understand clearly; 3. bright; 4. blank, pure; 5. state or explain; 6. incorrectly written or spoken.
印 pronounced "yin". Meanings: 1. seal, stamp; 2. a trace or a mark; 3. to stamp or to print; 4. to conform.

I found an archaic symbol for yin 印 in an archaic symbols book I have, and the seal was carved in a way that when stamped it is reversed.
Can not find the archaic symbol for kui 魁 but think it is also reverse. Since the other two characters, 英 and 白 are the same either direction, is it possible the entire seal was carved back to front ?
The carver was obviously very skilled, so why ?

Actually, I am getting a lot of help on two other forums.
I am told "The engraved characters on the seal are special seal script characters used for making seal inscriptions."
"The first traditional reading (from top to bottom, from right to left) is correct, 英魁白印 , Ying Kui Bai Yin .
"The seal of ( Family name ) Ying Kuibai"

You have already done most of the detailed work in deciphering the characters. I believe it reads “Ying Kui Bai Yin.” Or translated “Stamped or Marked by Ying Kui Bai.” The key here is the three character Chinese name followed by the verb Yin.
