Hi All,
I found several pieces of porcelain with American eagles on it! Here are a few examples. The decoration is hand-painted and looks really good to me to be real late 18th century items. The enamels look fine to me, and the footrims look ok --nice white porcelain--but I don't know enough to judge whether these are period or later copies. I know these are highly collected and are frequently copied--but the copies I have found online are nowhere as good as these are.
The only one that really bothers me is the pitcher, which doesn't seem to have a Chinese shape.
What are your thoughts on these? I am asking Peter, but thought I would ask you all, too. Are they real later 18th century pieces? Any thoughts on value? I got them for almost nothing--a single piece would be worth what I paid for all of them, even if they are vintage reproductions!
Thanks,
Charles

In my opinion they are 19th century rather than 18th century. Based purely on the border design.
However I am not an expert on these.
Highly desirable and sought after.
Would be most interested in what Peter and others think.
Mark
Late Qing/Republic was my impression too. The tea caddy formed like a miniature garden seat is typical for the time. Though I wouldn’t exclude there were earlier examples.

Hey Charles,
I am always confused by the eagle decorated pieces of export so I won't comment on the age, though to me based of the elongated spear point border mixed with the acanthus leaf border, and the style of eagle, I am wondering if it is not Samson or something like that, though the feet do look Chinese.
Here are a few examples of that type of eagle, note the differences in drawing, and overall feel of them. This style dates to around 1800-1810 ( I don't think yours are of that period), later ones tend to be wider, thinner, drawn more sketchily.
Cheers,
Jeremy
This is interesting timing because just this past week I came across a nice example that I took some pictures of. I will post them here so everyone can compare. At a distance there are similarities, but when you look closely you can see a significant difference in the level of details and overall quality. John
Perhaps John Guerrero will check in as he is very familiar with Chinese export. I too look forward to Peter's reply.
clearly they are in the export ware genre and of a style common from about 1780-1820. my objections to them being period pieces are the high state of preservation and the whiteness of the clay on the feet. on the other hand, the gold on the knop definitely says 19th C. and early at that and it does show desirable wear. if these dishes are authentic period pieces, they are exceptional finds.
after further consideration, i am going out on a limb by declaring them period and quite early at that. i have no reputation to risk, so calumnies hurled at me for error will not redound to my embarrassment. 🤣
Alas, Peter says they are French, and likely Samson, from roughly 1890s. Why French? The pitcher is the wrong shape for Chinese export; it is a later form from the mid-late 19th century; the gravy boats are a common French shape (but a rare shape for Chinese), the barrel-form jars are a later form than the original eagle pattern export ware from around 1800; the border pattern is a common French pattern; and the “Pinching bud” flower forms are a typical French, and not a Chinese feature. Also, Chinese eagles look more like fat sparrows, not like eagles as on these plates.
But they are in great condition for their age, and are worth something like 5 times what I paid for them. So I can't be disappointed!
Charles
Samson has it own collectors market. French porcelain is trending at the moment.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
