Hello,
This jar looks late 19th to early 20th century with lots of tiny bubbles under the glaze. But the painting is not high quality and seems to be in Japanese style. Any opinion on this?
Thanks!
One more photo of the foot.
I think it's Chinese and your dating is ok.

Dear Kelly,
it is simply awful. Forget the bubbles and concentrate your attention to the painting styles, if I may give you a suggestion.
Giovanni
A little rude maybe Giovanni ? That could have been a gift or passed down from a family member . You're honesty is good but maybe a little tact? lol
Dear Carlyoung you can be right, and if Kelly felt that, I apologize with him.
We all have different sensitivity. This has been already discussed in another thread.
I myself do really like to know what I have in hands, and if I have a garbage, I surely prefer who tells me that I have a garbage than who tells me that “your nice jar is not of the period”. That is of zero help in my opinion under the point of view of learning.
I do not think disrespectful to tell clearly anyone what he has in hands. I think much more disrespectful to others who does not signs his post, as many does here, for example. We all are different.
But again, if Kelly felt to be bad threated, I apologize. I considered him as being a new student in this field, and I hope that he will understand that my aim has been to suggest him what to look at firstly.
I too have passed through this at my beginning, concentrating attention to things like bubbles that has an irrelevant importance.
Giovanni
I know Giovanni you don't mean disrespect and i like you're honesty it makes me chuckle. All i meant was that things can be easily taken out of context especially on the internet and i just think that words like ''rubbish'' and ''garbage'' can be easily taken offence to as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Many automatically sign their posts with the avatar on the left but i don't understand why you would find that offensive .
I once too went down the bubbles line and quickly realised it was a waste of time , I realised that having a checklist of good points works better although i should follow my own advice more often.
Hello all,
Many thanks to those who provided honest opinions, especially those who went out of their way to help. As you can tell, I am very new at this. I truly appreciate any advise you all can give.
Kelly
Dear Carlyoung (you see? Here for example I am in difficulty. Should I call you Carl? Or Young?) what makes me unease in answering to those who not sign is my perhaps not updated mentality (I am 72).
It may be normal in today’s times, but for example if someone has “Mikey mouse” as a nickname and he doesn’t sign, I feel myself idiot in calling someone Mikey mouse. So much that I often avoid to post. Matter of my mentality.
This and your remark as being too much explicit has not been useless, because it makes me consider another not so nice aspect of a Forum like this one.
We have here buyers and sellers. It can easily happen that a buyer is posting here a bad piece that has been unconsciously bought from a seller who is a member here.
In that case, along the discussion within members, the different opinions like awful – not so bad after all etc., may include the seller himself, without being known to others.
This doesn’t happens to me, because I use the same nickname here and as a seller, but it is something that must be considered, to keep in mind during discussions. For sure in that case words like “garbage” may be sensitive.
Giovanni
Dear Kelly I am glad in knowing that you took my words in the right way and I have not offended your sensibility.
Back to your jar, pay attention at the faces. I have never seen faces like those.
Giovanni
Giovanni , you're expertise is very valuable to this forum and i respect you for the time and effort you put into it.
As for the jar I too think you are correct with the 19th century dating , As for the decoration you see better and a lot worse.
Hello Giovanni,
Thank you for pointing out the awfully drawn faces. I have not seen such faces in any form of Chinese art, either. And this is exactly the part that made me wonder whether it was actually Chinese, for I have seen some badly painted faces/figures generated outside China. Anyway since it is Chinese as many folks confirm here, then the only conclusion is that the painting must be very horrible.
Again thank you and all of you at the forum for providing such valuable feedback.
Kelly
