I might be throwing a bit of a curve ball as most of the discussion here is on East Asian ceramics. My apologies if I am outside of the scope of this website.
I found this piece this morning at a garage sale. The lady who owned it is an American who lived in Hong Kong in the 1970's. She said her mother owned an antique shop there, and brought this back to the United States when they moved. If possible, any information on the piece would be appreciated.
Also, apologies for the shoddy photography.

So in case anyone is interested, I was able to get ahold of the lady who owned this piece.
It turns out it is an 8th century santos, an image of St. Peter that was later brought over to the Philippines. I was thinking that it may have been something produced by Chinese craftsmen in Manila, as I know that Chinese people had set up workshops in Macau and Manila that were producing Christian icons in the colonial period. Anyways, it seems for certain now that it doesn't belong on this site, but I'm proud of it, and hope it keeps bringing joy.
Good hunting,

Hello positive
some time it takes time for some one to answer like me when i look at piece
and not shore of I'll start look at piece like it to get a time line for you it look like
it's was polychrome at one time in history with alter pieces that were out door
are harder to date with out see the bottom or full back view to see saw marks
to help in dating sorry for not getting with you glad you found out.
Hi John steward,
Thank you for sharing that information. I'm not familiar with dating wood sculptures, but looking at this piece reminded me of some of the 8th century Buddhist art that is still extant in the Todaiji in Japan. With a couple exceptions, it seems like those pieces have even less evidence of pigments, even though they were stored inside. So I'm still going to do some more research to see if this piece is that old, and if I get some more info maybe I will post it up here. Of course, I also appreciate and enjoy any of your insight as well.
All the best,
positive
Hello positive
saw mark are best way to tell age get me a picture of back and bottom
Hi John steward,
Thank you, that is very much appreciated. I left the icon at my mother's house and asked her to take the pictures. As soon as she sends them, I will post them here.
All the best
Ok, I was able to get more pics.
Hello positive
you can see how straight the saw lines are in a up and down movement and if the Marks are a1/4"
apart it after 1750. That went the water sawmill came in. The older pit hand pit sawmark are more angled
and eradicate from 1600 to 1750. Before that it would have been a drawknife or ax marks.
You can look up saws and tool mark on antique furniture.
An American saw but Europe would of had some thing similar if not fancier. But it does demonstrate Johns point.
Hi John steward and Ronm,
Thank you both for the information, I will use those leads to do more homework on this.
Wish you both the best,
positive
