My understanding of Peking glass is that it is layered in different colored glass and then carved like cameo or overlay glass. Much used to make snuff or perfume bottles. However I seem to see plain glass objects usually in much brighter colors than this vase labeled as Peking glass by sellers. This vase has been hand blown judging by the pontil mark of the base. It transmits light I have attempted to show this in my photo's . If it is Peking glass how do go about dating it. I understand bright colors especially yellow can bring quite high prices. Would the caramel/ alabaster color of this vase render it's value downwards. Vase is 24.5 cm or 9 inches tall.

I would be wary of this , it looks a poorly made item, with the crudely torn off pontil mark , and the shape of the vase is not good , imo, with an elongated neck .
These opaque glass items are common in China now , especially in the green colour, and are everyday , cheap things, so I think this one comes into the category of new and factory produced (but hand blown) and not antique.
Antique monochrome peking glass is very rare and valuable , especially if reign marked, and usually dates from C18th (production may have stopped in the C19th).
you sometimes see in antique shops multi-colour vases with birds in relief etc, but often these are C20th export items and also not high quality , so I think peking glass is a very specialist area

Thank you! No not on Ebay we are in the middle of moving house and found this in the back of a cupboard neither my wife or I can recall where or when we acquired it. It may of been a gift. I just thought that as it has a basic Asian shape it might be Peking glass. I know the cheap and cheerful type of colored glass you are referring to with birds etc, but as with a lot of things the early or older cameo type glass made in China has a lot of artistry and is quite sort after. If you google Antique Peking glass you will what I mean. Not that I had any illusions that my vase was old or valuable just wanted to know if I am safe to list it as as Peking glass if I sell it. It's funny with old European art glass they like to see the pontil to show it's hand made. Thanks again for taking the time to reply

I agree that Peking glass is a very specialized area. I have stayed away from it with one exception. I rather like Wang Hing silver and as I'm sure you know, the company has a very interesting history. SEE LINK
I encountered on Ebay in an auction a small but rather elegant Wang Hing silver bowl with the recognized Wang Hing marks. It contained what was described as a ruby red Peking glass liner (see photographs below). I have it with other items near a window and near a lamp and the contrast of the silver and ruby red is very attractive when the glass transmits sunlight or artificial light.
The Wang Hing factory used Peking glass in many of its items and the combination is really lovely. I attach an example of a beautiful silver bowl currently available on 1stdibs showing the exquisite silver which is greatly enhanced by the glass liner (First left photograph) .
As to Michael's vase I agree with your comments especially about the pontil mark. It seems an item of poor shape and poor manfacture most likely contemporary.

thanks for the link - I agree that the combination of peking glass and elaborate chinese silver is very attractive.
A few years ago I visited AC Silver in Newcastle, England: they had excellent stock, but very expensive!
Chinese silver seems to have peaked, and is declining slightly in value and interest now, right ?
- a few years ago it was very hot, with the research done by Adrian von furst (?) and his guide to all the hallmarks. .. I think much of the good stuff has been snapped up. Also world silver prices took a hit a while back.
