Good afternoon, can anybody read the signature and help me with dating a pair o small Chinese bowls? Heigth - 4,8, diameter 8,3 cm. Best regards, Lysander
Hi Lysander,
I find it difficult to judge the painting style of items if they're upside down. But the bottoms have a modern look to me and the marks look awkwardly written. I'm sure experts like Giovanni or Stuart can tell you about the bowls from a single glance.
Birgit
Hi Shinigami, bowls are so small, I have problem with making pictures in normal position. Will try tomorrow. Thank you for your opinion. Best regards, Lysander
My uneducated guess would be 20th Century Japanese bowls depicting water dragons with Chenghua marks.
Mark is Ming, chenghua, and my guess would be these are modern Chinese copies - the colours look wrong and, as shinigami says , the footrims looks recent
tam
I agree with others, surely not Ming.
Don't know if Japanese or modern though, since I know nothing about Japanese ceramic.
Regards,
Giovanni
I believe that one single blue circle up against the foot rim's interior wall often points to a Japanese origin.

Agree that they are recent copies. They are trying to be Doucai, and the enamel colors are roughly correct but the quality of painting is extremely poor with no effort whatsoever to shade or even follow the outlines. The body also seems to be an odd beige color which would be inappropriate for the period. Also, my understanding is that the Doucai technique involved the outlining of every element with blue prior to washing in the enamels--so even the red bats (or whatever they are) should have been outlined in blue.
Hi Lysander -
Attached images for comparison of two small doucai cups decorated with ‘kui’ type dragons from the National Palace Museum in Taipei, both with 6 character Changhua marks within a double square to base.
Such wares have been imitated from since the Jiajing period - so mid 16th century, and were very popular in the Kangxi and Yongzheng periods.
I would concur with the above comments, based on the painting style and enamel tones these are not Ming and, based on the tone of the porcelain, I would also rule out 18th/19th century.
I have no knowledge of the Japanese copies of such wares but, having looked at the above link, I think the overall quality of the drawing and composition may also rule this out - although I could well be wrong ...
Stuart
I'm not sure the circle is close enough to the footrim to use as an identifying feature for Japanese porcelain, it is hard to tell. If it is then, I would agree they are most likely Japanese.
I haven't come across a copy with a circle mark, only the double square - if it isn't Japanese maybe that is why these have a circle ie to make people think it might not be a copy?
Dear Stuart,
thank you very much. I;m little confused with these items. Will try to clean them, maybe colour of porcelain is not so bad. Also will make pictures with some details.
Best regards,
Lysander
