Dear all
What do you think of this pair? Mirrored pattern, height: 33cm.
Would you agree it's alright to date them 1940?
I truly appreciate all your comments and thoughts.
Kind regards,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
Very difficult to date said pair to precisely 1940 without some form of calligraphy dating on said etc.
There is a poem on the reverse that may hold further information.
IMO based purely on your pictures I would say very late republic, early PROC.
It is worth noting that during the Japanese invasion of 1937-1945 said invading imperial forces banned the import of cobalt blue pigment into China. Why I don't know!
I really like your vases. They are a great size and look in perfect condition.
Mark
Hi Mark,
One more time - massive thanks for your time and interest. Check the link below, I think my pair is exactly that kind of thing. Also, my apologies I have not mentioned this before, my pair is very thin and I struggled to find a proper name - it's there in Bonham's description - semi-eggshell, that's exactly what my vases are - like twice thicker eggshell porcelain.

Hi Adrian,
a nice pair of vases. My first thought was early PROC because of the „sweet looking“ faces but the bottom gives me doubts. It looks much more recent to me.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Thank you for your comment. What do you think of Rob Michiels' items like those?
The base is determined by the type of porcelain, some of the items have white foot rim, others have it yellowish or even orange with less or more dirt on it. The inside of the base in general should be like the rest of the body.
Here a very good links with loads of photos in the gallery:

You might be right, Adrian. I’m always suspicious of these perfectly white and smooth bottoms. On Republic I expect a rather „dry“ looking surface, often with tiny bubbles. I even have a 1950s vase with that look. But as the porcelain on your vases is very fine the bottom may also look different.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. It's not that easy to date items like that precisely, hence all the fun in trying 🙂 I have noticed that proper auction houses are using this method: if the object has obvious features of something closer to year 1900 rather than 1930-40 they date it as 'late Qing/Republic Period', otherwise it's just 'Republic Period', anything appearing bit more modern and they just date it as '20th Century' without any further explanations. And I understand that, it's good enough for a short catalogue description, certainly not enough for those who try to explore this field and learn more about the production of those items.
Kind regards,
Adrian

I agree with you wholeheartedly Adrian. Very frustrating with the 20th century label/other.
Mark
I think these are most likely PROC probably 1950s- 70s, partly because of the neck/shoulder pattern but also they appear to have that typical, simple wrap-around of the grass. I can't quite see that on yours, but it looks to be there. Shangri-la often have a good selection of 20th c vases to compare with. I'm not sure about the first RM vase, but I think the 2nd one is also PROC. As Birgit pointed out, the faces have that sweet look and are also less florid.
Hi Julia,
Interesting observations, thank you for sharing that with me. I am not trying to be stubborn and hold on to my opinion, quite opposite. I got them for peanuts and eventually I will make good profit on them. I'm learning and I want to gather as much data as I can. Also, like I said above, the subject is super interesting and exciting. At the moment I am very much into 20th C Chinese porcelain and I simply adore this type of wares.
I could agree for 50's but certainly not 70's as those are completely different in my opinion.
I have few items I found at Christies and Bonhams, that I would like you to look at and say what you think:
1st one I find identical in terms of quality to the RM's one and not that far from mine as well:

then few more:

And a pdf catalogue, positions 2030 & 2031

Adrian
